Chad SimcoxMemberThe dodging of the fisherman is a little weird and has caused a halo around him. I’d also like to see a bit more saturation in the image, especially in the sky. But you have to be careful not to make the sky and the fisherman’s shirt blend together.
Overall I really like the shot. Makes me wish I had a dog! There is a sense of freedom to this shot, if you know what I mean. I get the feeling of a long summer day, “dog days” that opens up the possibility to do anything you want without having anything tie you down. No commitments, other than the one you made to yourself to have a good time.http://society6.com/grainfarmer Fly Fishing and Landscape open edition Photography prints.

Chad SimcoxMemberWow what and awesome thing to witness and great execution on your part! How long did it take for the dragonfly to “hatch”? It’s crazy to see how small the wings are when it first came out compared to the time it was ready to fly away.

Chad SimcoxMemberWow thanks Kevin! Maybe I should start marketing myself as a photographer. I’m getting a little sick of sitting at the computer all day editing TV shows. I could use the fresh air!
I like you’re shot of the hat, looks like a good fishing hat for sure. Watch your highlights there, you lost some detail in the top of the hat. Also try adding a vignette to help focus on the embroidered tag line since that is the focal point of the photo.http://society6.com/grainfarmer Fly Fishing and Landscape open edition Photography prints.

Chad SimcoxMemberKevin, I’d hate to do that for a living!
You missed a sign or something on the left hand edge of the frame. May want to take that out, it’s kind of distracting.
Good work!http://society6.com/grainfarmer Fly Fishing and Landscape open edition Photography prints.

Chad SimcoxMemberChad – Natural light close to a window? Or was it stage?
This was just set up on my bed. There is a window near by, not the ambient wasn’t bright enough to show up in the shot. I used a small Sunpak 383 on sync chord for these.
Rich, thanks for sharing that you didn’t realize what that was. Sometimes as photographers it’s hard separate yourself from the subject to notice that some objects may not communicate very well in the final image. I may do a re-shoot this weekend.

Chad SimcoxMember#2 I like the contrast of the ants but I thought the green was just some kind of foam (I know that it is not). I would like to see the flies on something else.
Yeah I know what you mean. I like the contrast that the green foam fly box provides as opposed to a dark olive color or stuffed inside the ripple foam along with other flies. Thanks for the input. Maybe I’ll see how

Chad SimcoxMemberAwesome images Will! The emerging shot is amazing. Did you catch the insects then put them in an atrium? Cool shot of the caddis as well. The last one of the nymph is great as well. What is that a nymph of?

Chad SimcoxMemberZach,
That was done in PS. A tilt shift lens is on my list of things to get. Or maybe a lensbabies mount instead.
Phil emailed me after seeing it on my site which I’d assume is due to this wonderful forum here. So thanks to you Zach.

Chad SimcoxMemberBen,
great images. The post processing is an interesting take on these photos making them almost surreal and therefore giving a different perspective on the daily existence of these people. It seems as if either the viewer or the subject doesn’t believe things are the way they are. The 4th photo, in my opinion, is the best. It get’s into the face of this person and presents him as a person. The others feel like they are viewing the people as an object or subject instead of connecting with the human spirit/emotion. You do state that your goal is to “capture shots of people living life in its rawest form”. However, I do not get the feeling of watching these people live, rather a view of them as I pass by on the street. Get to know these people, then tell a story about who they are and where they come from with your photographs. Show us how they live, how they survive, not how they exist.
I hope this doesn’t come across as harsh, rather as words of encouragement and inspiration. I studied conceptual art, where critiques are harsh and hopefully true, but with the intent that they help you better communicate what you are trying to say without words.
Take a look at the book “Lost Angels” by Alfredo Falvo. He gets into the lives of his subjects living on Skid Row in L.A. There are prostitutes, junkies and theives. But there are also a lot of good people that are living in these situations through circumstance.Kevin,
I recognize #2 and 3 of your set. Are those along the Caney Fork? I swear that is the bait shop on the left side of the road after you cross the dam and head north towards Happy Hollow. I think that’s HWY 141 and HWY 96 Is that right?http://society6.com/grainfarmer Fly Fishing and Landscape open edition Photography prints.

Chad SimcoxMemberYeah i can see if you’re shooting sequences that you can easily burn through a few gigs of space. I’ve shot sequences with BMX riders and surfers, but I haven’t thought about doing so with outdoor type activities.
Do you bracket exposures much or just set and shoot the sequence?http://society6.com/grainfarmer Fly Fishing and Landscape open edition Photography prints.

Chad SimcoxMemberWow John that’s a lot of shooting! I have 2 – 1GB and 1 – 2GB and rarely fill them up. I usually use 2 cards at a time but I really can’t think of a single outting that I’ve used all 3 cards. I can’t imagine filling up over 4GB in a single day.
The idea of not putting all your eggs in one basket is a good idea, you never know what’s going to happen.
Corey, yesterday I came across your photo stream on flickr. You’ve got some cool shots in there. It’s funny that I just realized that it was your stream when I thought your avatar looked really familiar.http://society6.com/grainfarmer Fly Fishing and Landscape open edition Photography prints.

Chad SimcoxMemberRaid’s are your safest option, depending on the type of raid (there are different numbers/levels).
Everyone knows the saying “every hard drive will fail”. By placing your media or whatever other files on a single external HD, you’re opening yourself up to the risk of loosing your content when that drive fails. A raid works as a mirrored drive set up. So if one drive fails on a raid, there is a mirrored copy of it leaving the files still accessible.
Do I have a raid? No. But I would like to have one if I had the $ for it.http://society6.com/grainfarmer Fly Fishing and Landscape open edition Photography prints.

Chad SimcoxMemberThanks for sharing. Another good resource that I used to frequent is the forum at http://www.npcolorado.net/. If you’re in Colorado or making a trip there, this is a good site to check. You can usually get status updates on different areas of the state. Also there area ton of wonderful landscape photos to look at.

Chad SimcoxMemberI’m curious, from a fishing perspective; this a fly for freshwater fish, or salt? Of course I realize it could be used for either, but I’m wondering what it’s specifically tied for, and what the overall size of the fly is.
Kendal,
This is a freshwater fly. I wouldn’t use it for salt soley for the fact that it is tied on a freshwater hook. But I bet it would make an amazing sand crab pattern for corbina and halibut. The overall size is probably 3″. Not having it here in front of me, I’m going to assume it is tied on a size 4 or size 6 hook. It’s a big heavy fly!
I bought it from Fly Fishing Outfitters in Avon, Co to use on The Blue River below Green Mountain Reservoir. I don’t think this fly has ever seen the water. If I ever pick up an 8wt like I plan on doing, I’ll probably throw this bad boy for the big bass that live in the lakes here. Thanks for the other comments guys. Zach, this was a spur of the moment self assignment to just try and see if I could get a shot that I found to be interesting.
