Chad SimcoxMemberI haven’t shot anything in over a week, and needed to get my fix.
This morning I set up a little “still life” type set up and just started experimenting with different objects and lighting.
Here are two shots, one of my Fishpond vest done as a branding style product shot. The other is of some of my favorite summertime terrestrial flies. Figured I’d shoot and post these before I have to head into work and sit in the edit suite all day.

As always, looking for input on what is working for you, what isn’t working for you. Like the style, don’t like the style? I’ve been enjoying single source lighting lately, it seems to give a much more natural look which is what I was going for here.

John BennettMemberKnow the feelling Chad. I haven’t pointed my camera at anything in a week and its gettin to me 🙂
Like the side and strength of light in the first as well as the DoF. It’s likely just me but wouldn’t mind seeing a little less DoF and maybe even in a black and white.

MemberGreat Shots. Break out the ants.
#1 is a perfect product shot.
#2 I like the contrast of the ants but I thought the green was just some kind of foam (I know that it is not). I would like to see the flies on something else.I have to include my “Troutaholic Hat” because of the subject line.

Yeah I know what you mean. I like the contrast that the green foam fly box provides as opposed to a dark olive color or stuffed inside the ripple foam along with other flies. Thanks for the input. Maybe I’ll see how

When you mentioned it was a fly box it clicked.

Chad SimcoxMemberChad – Natural light close to a window? Â Or was it stage?
This was just set up on my bed. There is a window near by, not the ambient wasn’t bright enough to show up in the shot. I used a small Sunpak 383 on sync chord for these.
Rich, thanks for sharing that you didn’t realize what that was. Sometimes as photographers it’s hard separate yourself from the subject to notice that some objects may not communicate very well in the final image. I may do a re-shoot this weekend.

MemberThanks for sharing how it was shot Chad. I know it may seem trivial to you all who know what they’re doing in a studio.

Joel – I didnt want to take away from Chad’s photos but the subject line made it fitting. I did try to shoot the photo with Chad in mind with the one source lighting and such but the color version went terribly wrong. I could post it to get a good laugh.
I have to say I really love what Chad does with his images. The dark natural warmth that they have is inspiring enough to try to duplicate but I cannot. I have also shown his images to one of our regular photographers and he cannot do it. That is a true kudos to Chad. Now to talk the client into hiring him.

Chad SimcoxMemberWow thanks Kevin! Maybe I should start marketing myself as a photographer. I’m getting a little sick of sitting at the computer all day editing TV shows. I could use the fresh air!
I like you’re shot of the hat, looks like a good fishing hat for sure. Watch your highlights there, you lost some detail in the top of the hat. Also try adding a vignette to help focus on the embroidered tag line since that is the focal point of the photo.http://society6.com/grainfarmer Fly Fishing and Landscape open edition Photography prints.
