I guess you could say that pretty much sums up my fishing as of late…
This morning, a buddy and I set out for a Middle Georgia Tailwater to chase one of our species of ill repute.
Gearing up…

The warnings:

The gear (hookless):

The early morning run:

The fish:

I am starting to think that there is no such thing as a “trash fish”.

Steve K.MemberNice job Andrew! I’ve been trying to get out and chase gar all summer….just didn’t happen. I’ve tied (and used) rope flies before….but never used a wire nut for the head. Neat! I typically glue a set of eyes on each side of the “head” and then cover with a blob of epoxy. It looks neat but as you probably know….the fish are not very picky.
I must say that I’m surprised you had any hookups this late in the year. I always thought (obviously I thought wrong) that the gar quit feeding on the surface once the weather (and water) starts to cool off.
Did you not wear gloves? 😮
I’m assuming this was a sight fishing affair?
Thanks for posting……Steve

MemberSteve,
It was indeed a site fishing affair. While these fish were not surface feeding, they were still visible a few feet below the surface, and we were seeing quite a few of them. I can only imagine the fishing would be even better in the warmer months.Oct 10, 2010 at 1:47 pm #45394Tim Pommer

MemberVery cool outing, and no, there is no such thing as a trash fish. All fish species deserve our admiration.

MemberA quick comment on the fly….
It is heavy as all get out when wet, and really a pain to cast. I think I made my first attempts a little thick and wound up trimming the fly up on the water which made it a little better.
I know that this is a pretty commonly used method for these fish, so I would be curious to hear if any of you have had the same issues and how you corrected it. The fly certainly did it’s job when it came to holding the fish, but it seems like there has got to be some way to improve on it.

MemberI never would have thought of the wire nut for the head of a rope fly. How did you work that out? Details?

Yeah, you caught me…
I tried it for a while, but fishing in PFD really sucks. As you can see from the pictures, they were not generating while we were there, so I gave up on it pretty quickly.
On another note, I did some more research and made a few modifications to the flies that I think will wind up working a little better. I will try to get around to posting a few pictures in the next day or so.

Chad SimcoxMemberMy brother did this over in Alabama, they even cooked one up and said it tasted pretty good. I like the head of the fly. I almost wonder if it would be beneficial to have tippet thread through the cap and tie in on the inside to protect the not from the teeth… just a thought from someone who has never gone after gar on the fly.

Mike LewisMemberNice report. I was in a cold running river once this summer and passed a warmer running tributary that was stacked up with gar everywhere. Very impressive fish. Since then, I’m always keeping my eyes peeled for more.
