Chad SimcoxMemberCheck out some of the videos made with the Canon HV30 (as well as HV20) on Vimeo. A lot of cool creative stuff being done with those cameras when using photo lens adapters.
As far as training… I don’t know really. Maybe Videography magazine or Lynda.com. I’ve worked as a videographer for years, but I got my start before internet training videos… Framing is just like that of a photograph. The rule of 3rds applies. Smaller field of view + larger aperture = shallow DOF. Transitions in camera or in editing? There are natural transitions achieved in camera, like someone walking in front of the lens. The show West Wing was great for it’s use of natural transitions and single take scenes. Editing wise, you need to understand what transitions mean on a psychological level. Some are for mere style, where others show a passage of time or change of place. Some inflict emotion. For the most part, straight cuts and dissolves are all you need. A lot of people tend to over use/improperly use transitions when editing.
I’ve been working in TV production and post for 10 years and am still learning and studying. I study by watching the work of others and reverse engineering it or watching for what is working and what isn’t working. Magazines can be useful as well…http://society6.com/grainfarmer Fly Fishing and Landscape open edition Photography prints.

Chad SimcoxMemberI’m not much of a reader at all. I only buy art/photo books and am stimulated visually. That doesn’t mean I just look at “pretty colors”, I study and think about the conceptual ideas that the artist is communicating.

Chad SimcoxMemberAs soon as I get my 8wt reel in, I hope to start having some winter fishing pics from the beaches of L.A. Hopefully there will be some photos of fish and sharks too!
I couldn’t convince my one fly fishing buddy here to go up into the mtns when there is snow on the ground. He doesn’t know what he’s missing out on!http://society6.com/grainfarmer Fly Fishing and Landscape open edition Photography prints.

Chad SimcoxMemberHmm heat is one thing, which you know Denver can get downright hot in the summer time as well. But man that humidity in the south sucks (I grew up in Memphis and went to FL on vacation as a kid). Everyone I know from FLA was glad to get out, and have no desire to go back. But they aren’t fishers, so they have a different perspective.
I guess it’s a toss up between hurricanes and blizzards. Palm trees or aspens.http://society6.com/grainfarmer Fly Fishing and Landscape open edition Photography prints.

Chad SimcoxMemberAww man the video’s no longer available. I edited a sketch comedy show with Nat Lampoon earlier this year and the writer of this sketch was the shows head writer. I know it had to be funny!

Chad SimcoxMemberAs far as big box stores printing services, I’ve found Target (not the 1hr service) to provide great prints, though some cropping does occur due to the difference in aspect ratio from the sensor to an 8×10. Can’t remember if there is a Target in the Boro. I’d also try Batey’s over on Spring St.

Chad SimcoxMemberDefinitely to Fly Fish more! I had 3 or 4 days on the water this past year chasing trout… I think I spent 2 trying my luck in the surf with a 5wt. Big mistake there. Compared to the past 4 years in Colorado, I stretched a long weekend’s worth of fishing out over a whole year.
But I got an 8wt saltie for christmas, and bought a bunch of tying supplies for salt flies yesterday. I’ve got a friend at work that FF as well, so now I just have to convince him (or his wife) that we need to hit some local streams.

Chad SimcoxMemberI’d hit RMNP on the East side for a day, focusing mostly on the Big T. Then head over the pass and fish the headwaters of the Colorado. It’s a fun meadow stream and there is the opportunity to see moose along the river. Plus the trout are eager to take flies. After fishing the headwaters, I’d drive down stream and fish the Colorado near Hot Sulfur Springs. Bigger river with much bigger fish. Next stop for me would be to head south to the Blue, with the option to move on to Tenmile Creek for some good pocket water action.
Another fun stream to fish is Homestake Creek in the Holy Cross area south of Vail. Lower portions of the creek are steep and with Class V rapids, great for kayaking but not fishing. The sections above the white water is a nice meadow stream with beaver damns making for some fun beaver pond fishing. Tons of hungry browns in that stream. The headwaters aren’t too far from Leadville, just over Tennessee Pass.

Chad SimcoxMemberNot allowed? I don’t understand why it wouldn’t be allowed? By who, the forum?
If you’re looking for a critique, here’s what I think.
The texture is distracting from the product. You want to highlight the reel and it’s craftsmanship in a photo like this, and the texture prevents that.http://society6.com/grainfarmer Fly Fishing and Landscape open edition Photography prints.

Chad SimcoxMemberWonderful piece. I’ve built one graphite rod and enjoyed it. I can’t imagine what it’s like to build a rod completely from scratch. From the initial piece of bamboo to the final rod is such an amazing transformation and takes great skill.

Chad SimcoxMemberThat’s some of my favorite weather to be fly fishing in. Then again, I also have fun in the rain… Of course, as long as there is no lighting or heavy winds I like to be out.
Great fish! Those colors are amazing and those browns are some bruisers. Hope you weren’t pulling them off their redds.

Chad SimcoxMemberI gave up the band scene (for profit) a long time ago – they seem to be the only people with less money than photographers.
ShannonIt depends on the level of artist you’re working with for sure! I’m shooting musicians through work so I don’t get paid extra, but it’s the highlight of my week and I get to build a nice portfolio.

Chad SimcoxMemberIn this situation I would shoot RAW + JPG. They’re going to want most if not all of the photos and you’re not going to want to process every single shot.

Chad SimcoxMemberI have a Genesis 200 w/ softbox and like it quite a bit. It uses an Elinchrom mount for the adapter ring, so you’ll be able to outfit it with a lot of accessories. It has plenty of power for small objects and is more than enough for in studio use. I have yet to use it at full power, even on full body portraits. They have a built in optical slave, and I’ve only had a few mis-fires out of hundreds of shots (literally close to a thousand photos over the course of a few weeks). So you only need the supplied sync chord going to one monoblock and the other will fire from the slave. The modeling lamp isn’t very bright and the replacement bulbs can be pretty pricey, but there are 3rd party bulbs on the market that you can get if you need to.
I’m looking at picking up the two light kit myself for use when shooting full band promo shots. The sunpak 383’s just arent enough when wanting to shoot around f11.
Here are a few shots to show results big and small.
