Michael…I was being facetious….notice the little “winking” icon in my post. It’s sort of an inside joke here at IA regarding wood boats. We’ve had this discussion before. The paint and varnish on my woody was applied 12 years ago so I ‘m with ya’.
Dave….you forgot to mention wood boats require a lot of maintenance like continuous sanding and varnishing 😉

Hey Jay….I bumped into your blog the other day while surfing….good stuff!
I’ve only fished that area once….pulled the driftboat out there and had a blast. I just wish that drive was not so dang long. Zach…I’m assuming you go 20 west to BHM and then up through Tupelo and Memphis?? Is there a shorter way? How do you “shorten” the trip with regard to restaurants/sights along the way?

Kyle..here’s a few with the 12-24 on the wide end. My skills probably don’t do the lens justice. Given the lenses you have now….you might want to spring for the 11-16mm as previously mentioned.
…another vote for the Tokina 12-24. I never thought I’d buy a 3rd party lens until I did some research. This lens gets excellent reviews and is a great bang for the buck. The build quality is top notch and doesn’t look or feel cheesy. I picked a used one up in mint condition off craigslist for 400 bones.

Mike…I took both my sons to AK this summer. My oldest son had never caught a sockeye and was really excited when he finely landed one. He was raised on Smokey Mountain trout where a 14 inch fish is considered a trophy. So after losing a few to broken leaders and way too small tippets….he finally landed one. He was so excited. His younger brother….who was across the river….yelled at him to hold it up so he could see it. Kevin raised the fish above his head with a big grin on his face and I snapped a quick photo. Anyhow….the shot is one of my favorites from the trip. It’s a slightly different angle to the typical grip and grin:

Zach….in the second photo…you can see the 1″ wide piece of flat aluminum stock that spans between the two bolts….there is another at the bottom as well. I think it spreads the load pretty well. There is no other reinforcement. There is a caveat….the motor very easily tilts up. So….if I whack something at full speed….I think the motor will kick up and absorb some of the force.
I’m hoping anyway.
Andrew’s gar post got me off my duff to photograph the redneck jackplate. It took about 4 feet of angle aluminum and some plywood / nuts and bolts. I think I may have about $30 in the jackplate. So….it’s cheap, has a ton of redneck appeal and is very functional. Keep in mind….my motor is air-cooled so my only issue with the height of the motor was cavitation. I’ve got it about as high as I can go without losing some performance.
