Steve K.MemberThe past few weekends Georgia Power has opened the gates. I noticed all the boaters in the grassy field when I went through yesterday. These events have to be a boon to the economy in that area. I wish they would release water more often.
How was the fishing?
Steve K.MemberWow……not sure which is better….the bones or the GTs!
Good stuff Tim!

Steve K.MemberZach,
My son does some training at Blalock’s Lakes in Newnan, GA. He gets his quail from a feed store in Ranburne, AL. Ranburne is the first I-20 exit across the state line….I’m guessing 20 to 30 minutes from the I-20 / I-285 interchange. There is also a quail hunting plantation near there where he takes his dog. From what he said….its pretty cheap…..not much more than a round of golf. The quail are planted but flight-trained. I’ll try to get the info.
Steve K.MemberMay be a few months older or newer than last year.

This one made me laugh! Thanks for sharing.
Steve K.MemberThanks guys.
Randy….yes I’m familiar with West Systems products and have some resin, hardner, cloth and pumps on order. I may pick your brain from time-to-time if you don’t mind.
Zach….that is a neat concept but would most likely de-value the boat. The red Snipe in the last two photos is for sale now at $5800.00. That includes the period Johnson outboard as well as the trailer. Thanks for taking the time to sketch it out. I still may use the closed-cell foam for protection.
I’ve learned that there is an original ledger at the Washburn County (Wisconsin) Historical Society that has records for most of the Shell Lake boats. I had them run my serial number and found that it was sold to a store known as “Auto Electric Service” on November 19, 1947 for a whopping price of $126 bones. π
See the fifth entry from the top….#539:

Steve K.MemberGood stuff Jason! Looks like you found those aggressive brown trout. I see there was a dusting of snow while you were there (photo #4).
We’re experiencing the same thing here at Great Smoky Mountain National Park. Stupidity knows no bounds. The Oconaluftee Visitor’s Center is closed along with the parking lot (cones and barricades). The irony lies in the fact that the facility was totally funded by contributions from the citizens…..no federal money whatsoever.
The Appalachian Trail is open at Newfound Gap along with the parking lot and restrooms….but a mile down the road you cannot (legally) park in a pullout and hike a backcountry trail.
The Blue Ridge Parkway is open, but the Pisgah Inn is closed. The manager tried to stay open but the Feds found a way to shut him down. He’s leased the inn and restaurant from the Park Service for 35 years. He refused to close…..so the Federales blocked the entrance with patrol cars. He can stay open….but customers have no way to get to him.
Go figure.
Glad you guys could “improvise and overcome”. π
Steve K.MemberLike Michael….mine would be my driftboat. Both my boys helped build it when they were youngsters. My Taco is a close second as it is often my humble abode when going on fishing road trips.

Steve K.MemberGreat post Ashlee. Making some great memories there!
Steve K.MemberNice job Brett! Tack sharp…and I know that ain’t easy to do.
I know those pronghorn can be skittish….either your stalking ability is top notch….or you have a hefty telephoto lens….or a combination of both. π
Tripod w/ remote release?
Steve K.MemberGood stuff Mike! Thanks for sharing.
Is this the product you are speaking of?

Steve K.MemberJay,
You really lucked out if you found a driftboat trailer here locally….especially for a good price. To give you a point-of-reference….15 years ago a driftboat trailer for sale in Georgia was a rarity. I either had to build my own or special order through a dealer. I finally ordered a Hyde trailer….which is a Cadillac if I might add. $1500 bones…..ouch!
Thanks for posting your reports…..I’m watching this thread closely.
Steve K.MemberMichael….I have a friend that carves fish on occasion. I have no idea if he would do one on a commission basis….but will find out if you are interested. Here is a pic of one he did prior to mounting it on a piece of driftwood.

Steve K.MemberZach,
Those cabinets you’ve mentioned are expensive….but I’m sure they will hold their value. Think of them as an investment…ha…ha.
If you are ever in Asheville….there are several antique stores on Swannanoa Road that have these on occasion. The Old Tobacco Barn antique store comes to mind.
I have an old Gerstner as Aaron mentioned. I paid $200 for it on Ebay a few years ago.
Steve K.MemberThese folks have treated me right on multiple occasions. They have three lodges….check out Kulik Lodge for a full-service deal. Check Brooks Lodge for a do-it-yourself situation. You can also do flyouts with them as they have their own fleet of floatplanes. The beauty of their service (in my opinion)….you get to ANC airport on your own……they will get you and your gear to the lodge. They make sure you get back to ANC in a timely manner as well.
Good luck and post a report.

Steve K.MemberFYI……
Here’s a comprehensive state-by-state listing of gas stations that sell ethanol free gasoline:
Steve K.MemberMy paltry offerings. Thanks for posting guys….I learn a lot by studying your work!

Steve K.MemberYour self-portrait kinda reminded me of the scene in Scarface….a la Tony Montana. π

Steve K.MemberJay,
I’m seeing a lot of chips and dings in the gunnel areas. Nothing personal…but I’ve always thought those “rolled” gunnels (photos #6, 7,8 and 9) on the Clacka are butt ugly. I think this is a prime opportunity to cut off the damaged gunnels and replace with oak gunnels…one inside and one outside….similar to a Boulder Boat.

You could attach the hardwood gunnels directly to the hull….and leave out the frames. I believe this would give you the necessary rigidity.
Anyhow……I’m pulling for you dude. This will be neat!
Steve K.MemberNice report Travis!
What type of boat/motor are you using? It looks like a Towee or something similar. I’m doing the same thing (chasing smallies in “smallish” water) here in Western NC.
