If point-and-shoot is acceptable….I’d suggest the Pentax Optio W10. It takes great pictures (6 megapixel) and is waterproof. So….if you’re gonna use it around water a lot….you might consider it.

Sells for $250 to $300 at various online dealers.

What I found interesting is that both lakes (Lewis and Yellowstone) have boat ramps. I’m thinking it would be easy to castnet fingerlings and put them in the livewell, and then head over to Lake Yellowstone where they are dumped. I don’t know why anyone would want to go to the trouble … but who knows?

Crocs are all the rave with the ultralight backpacking crowd. They like them as camp shoes and for stream crossings. I’m curious how well they will hold up over time. While passing through the Denver airport recently, I saw a whole wall in the newstand that had a display of Crocs. Note to self:

Many of us down here in Georgia send them to Jimmy Harris at http://www.unicoioutfitters.com . He has a local artisan that will glue new felt soles on and then stitch them. Indestructable. I’ve used the resole kits that are sold for about $20 with mixed results. If the rest of the boot is serviceable, I’d go with the glue/stitch method.

I saw in a flyfishing catalog (The FlyShop maybe) where they were advertising Gorilla Glue as the product to use to glue the felt soles on…..supposedly better than Barge Cement.

Anyone used Gorilla Glue for this? I didn’t think it was flexible enough.

Zac….I just purchased a Lowepro Dryzone 200 for the upcoming Alaska trip…..and it is one nice camera backpack!! Completely waterproof and even holds my 400mm telephoto, gimbal head and tripod. Also meets carry-on rerstrictions. Highly recommended.

I like the “classic” look for a reel that will go on a bamboo stick. For that reason, I chose a Bill Ballen reel to mate with my Mike Brooks 4 weight.

When I’m out west, I use foam hoppers with my favorite being a Chaos Hopper (Tied by Craig Matthews of http://www.blueribbonflies.com )

On some streams, the trout ignore them unless the wind starts blowing. I guess it’s not natural for a hopper to be in the water when it’s calm. I fish them on a dead drift most of the time……but there are times when a little twitch will drive a trout nuts.

I feel your pain. I’ve fished Railroad Ranch with trout rising everywhere but couldn’t manage a bite. I tend to have much better success in the Box…..I guess the water is moving faster and the fish can’t scrutinize your fly as closely.

Bill Ballen reel and I built the rod on a Mike Brooks blank (MacKenzie taper). It’s a 4wt setup that is fun when you’re after those goggle-eye perches 🙂

Scott Fibertouch??? I’ll hafta check on that 🙂 Those old glass rods use to be a bargain on Ebay…but not anymore. I’ve got an Orvis Fullflex and a A&F, both with original sock and tube. Call me “Old School”. 🙂

Cameron…..good looking bugs! I love tying with foam…..and fishing a glass rod. I’m restoring an old Abercrombie and Fitch glass rod right now. Can’t wait to try it on some bream and bass!

Have you checked out those Diamondglass rods yet. They are sweet but pricey!

Try using a tripod when zooming out to 200mm. I know with my telephoto, the slightest vibration will blur the photo.

You could also push the ISO up to 600 or 800 and use a faster shutter speed. I’m still new at this so take it for what it’s worth. I’m sure Zach or Richard can help you out.

Nice photos splitshot. I have a picture of my 19 year old son….when he was six, playing on that same footbridge in your second photo. I’m anxious to see the elk shots. Were they hanging out in the pastures along the road?
