I had a felt sole come off one of my boots yesterday while fishing.

Don’t do it yourself, you’ll be unable to make a strong enough bond.

    BD,

Many of us down here in Georgia send them to Jimmy Harris at http://www.unicoioutfitters.com . He has a local artisan that will glue new felt soles on and then stitch them. Indestructable. I’ve used the resole kits that are sold for about $20 with mixed results. If the rest of the boot is serviceable, I’d go with the glue/stitch method.

I saw in a flyfishing catalog (The FlyShop maybe) where they were advertising Gorilla Glue as the product to use to glue the felt soles on…..supposedly better than Barge Cement.

Anyone used Gorilla Glue for this? I didn’t think it was flexible enough.

I wonder if the bleach had a negative effect on the glue BD?

I am also in need of some new boots but mine just wore out. Are the Simms worth the extra $$$?

Korkers look like a pretty good idea. When one pair of soles wears out buy and snap in another. Plus, you can get cleated, felt, trail, and aquastealth inserts for the same upper.

Anyone have any practical experience with them. I’ve just tried them in shops.

    I don’t think so.

I’ve been trying to wear a pair out for a few years now.

If I’m just going to replace them when the soles wear out, I lean toward buying cheap boots.  You can get a decent “brand x” pair at the big box stores for about $40-50, which isn’t much different than the cost of the re-sole job Zach was talking about.  In the case of the boots I’m talking about, a sole fell off, but it was getting awfully thin anyway, so even if it had stayed on I’d be looking at a replacement soon.

If I were to spend the $100+ for the Simms boots, re-soling looks like a much more attractive option.  I can’t imagine that felt wears down any slower on the more expensive boots.
