I have a bad habit of buying gear, especially reels(see danielsson thread) and selling it to get something else. However, there are a few items that I will never sell…

    1. Sage 5300 reel-if you have ever seen one you know why and my daughter already has dibs on it.

    2. Old Florida SA 55

    3. Sage XP 9 1/2 ft 7wt.-The best Great Lakes Steelhead rod ever made. It does it all…OK, maybe I would sell it to get the same rod in a 4 piece.

Other than that there is not a single other piece of gear in my collection that is safe.

If that’s what I have to look forward to when I turn 30, then I can’t wait.

A green woolly bugger. My first tie.

Another green woolly bugger. My daughters first tie.

Any of my Sig V Dan Craft rods. Can’t get them anymore

G-Loomis GL3 6wt. The first fly rod I ever built.

The memories of good times with good friends and family spending time on the water. Those are the most valuable things I own period.

A friend of mine in Michigan once told me that you NEVER sell a gun that you own and is paid for.

My most prized posession is my Sage LL 279 rod.  It’s the old model with slide band reel seat.  Super sweet dry fly rod.

I guess, I’d never sell any of my Sage rods, but that one is my favorite.  ;D

Hands down….my homebuilt Tatman driftboat. Built by me and my two sons in 1998. Second would be my 4 weight bamboo I built on a Mike Brooks blank/Dickinson taper.

    Drifter,

That is one sweet looking boat. What a way to spend to time with your sons.

How long did it take you to build it and where did you get the plans?

    Steve,

I ordered the kit from Greg Tatman at http://www.gregboats.com/. The lumber is precut by computer and is put together very easily. I prices the materials and started to build from a set of plans…but by the time I ordered marine plywood, Port Orford cedar, red oak and a scarfing jig, it was much cheaper to build from the kit.

The kit was about $900 if I remember right. Add options, adhesives, cost of shipping and I finished it with about $1800 invested. Greg is a pleasure to work with and is just a phone call away. Many folks shy away from wooden boats but a lot of the fear is unfounded. UV rays are the boats biggest enemy but not a problem with me. My boat is stored in my garage with a canvas cover over it when not in use.

I would not sell my Orvis Spring Creek Traveler or my L. L. Bean Silver Guide reel.

I’m with Cameron – I never sell or give away old gear I just collect more. Much to my wife’s dismay.
But a few things I would never consider selling:

An old wooden trout net I’ve had for close to 30 years. Still use it. I’ve replaced the bag portion 3 times.

My Thompson model A vise that I’ve had for almost 30 years as well. Still use it occasionally.

A custom made (for me to my specs) 8.5 ft 5 wt rod built on a St. Croix blank. It was built by a professional builder in Arkansas. I have more expensive rods. But I just like this one the best by far. I seem to cast better with it as well. I have about 6 trout rods but use this one 95% of the time.

    Troutwag,

It took about 8 weeks….start to finish. We worked in the evenings and on Saturdays. We could hardly wait for Saturdays to roll around…..it was really fun watching it take shape.

I do a little woodworking as a hobby but nothing serious. On a scale of one-to-ten, with ten being a master carpenter….I’m probably a 6 or 7.

Read his website and you’ll get an idea what is involved.
