Went up Thursday and came back Sunday.  Fished Thursday night and Friday morning with absolutely no luck.  Went out Friday Night and when we got out of the truck there were caddis everywhere.  We were pretty excited and were looking forward to a great night of fishing.  Got our waders on as fast as we could.  When we finally got onto the water, there were still caddis absolutely everywhere.  However, we had yet to see a fish rise.  So we decided to put on an elk hair caddis and drop a caddis emerger.  After flogging to water for about 30 min we hadn’t even had a strike.  So we started trying different flys, and after a couple hours we had tried every fly in our box and had nothing more than a few 6″ fish.  When we got back to the truck we started talking to a few locals who said that they got a few nice fish on flavs (which we tried).  So not a great trip so far.

Floated the Box Canyon Saturday and did pretty well.  We put in around 9:00 or 10:00 and for the first few hours didn’t have anything on over 6 inches.  But around 2:30 we noticed a good amount of golden stones flying around, so I put on a big foam salmonfly (it was all I had).  On my first cast I had two fish come up, look at it, and go back down (probably laughing).  Second cast, another fish came up and went back down.  At this point I’m getting pretty mad at myself for not being prepared with the right patterns.  On my 5th or 6th cast a fish took it right as it hit the water, and I of course wasn’t expecting it and couldn’t have been more late setting the hook.  Now I am really mad, I finally get a fish to take my fly and I miss it.  Then the next cast WHAM!, a fish thrashes at my fly, and this time I was ready.  After a good fight I finally get him in, a nice 20″ bow.  Hurry released it and went for more.  But by that time the stones had stopped flying around and the fish weren’t feeding on them anymore either.  Still, the rest of the float went pretty well, ended with two more around 16″ or 18″.  So in the end a great day on the box made the trip well worth it.

I feel your pain. I’ve fished Railroad Ranch with trout rising everywhere but couldn’t manage a bite. I tend to have much better success in the Box…..I guess the water is moving faster and the fish can’t scrutinize your fly as closely.
