Scott Kitchens and I struck out trying to find spawning browns, but lucked out in the Tallulah Gorge, where they were generating water for the playboats. 700 cfs doesn’t sound like much… until you funnel it through this.
Scott can name the actual rapids, but it was pretty impressive. The first dude looked like a newbie, but the second guy shot right through like it was no big deal.
The past few weekends Georgia Power has opened the gates. I noticed all the boaters in the grassy field when I went through yesterday. These events have to be a boon to the economy in that area. I wish they would release water more often.
Nonexistent, Steve. We were trying to find browns on the upper end of Lake Seed and I can confirm they are not there, unfortunately.
From what I heard that day they open the gates twice a year, once this time of year and once in the spring, so that the playboaters can play. It’s pretty gnarly stuff! The people getting ready to take their turns looked pretty scared to be honest.
Brenda and I stumbled on Tallulah Gorge last summer on our way up to Asheville NC. It is a very nice place and even a little historic. We had a great hike through the woods although we didn’t hike down to the bottom of the gorge. The nature center is also very interesting. I was wondering if there were any fish down there but wasn’t going to go all the way down to find out.
