Mike McKeownMemberHi Guys
I am off to Jurassic Lake in Patagonia in 10 days time… 6 days fishing… biggest average trout in the world…
So I want to get some good and interesting photos, other than the run of the mill, grip and grins, which there will be lots. But I want some interesting and different fish photos and things.
I have learnt so much from this sight, like listening to Zack and Phil on the photo pod cast, reading Phil’s cover photo thread, reading and looking at all the photos and tips from the top guys, Corey, Jay, John, Douglas, Matt, hell this could be a long list…
So what I want to know is, if there was one interesting angle or shot you would really like to take there, what would it be?
Here are a few or the pics we already have… to me, most of them are a little bland.

MemberMike – have a great trip. A friend of mine went there a couple of years ago and loved it.
Not sure about planning for angles, but others may well disagree – often the photo just pops into ones’ head……….
Have a good one, look forward to seeing the pix on your return.

Mike McKeownMemberThanks Henry, tying up a storm…
Can’t wait for the fishing…Oct 18, 2010 at 3:17 pm #71507
John BennettMemberOn shots. As Henry said stuff often just pops. Or worded another way when your “there” you take into account light, direction, foreground/background etc, etc and you see a shot.
What I wouldn’t do and I would avoid it at ALL cost is the shoot at a WA, thrust fish forward and make it look larger than life. So uninspirational, so tired, so yesteryears grip and grin.
Dont, you’ll hate yourself in a year or twos time 🙂

Colin M.MemberMike, one thing that i have noticed with rainbow trout in general, is that holding the fish at the right angle is important to get a good view of the colors.

You had me at hello, LOL.
Mike, you have a great eye and surely know what you want in regard to composition. At your level I would simply recommend the same as John above: taking a ton of shots of each fish with different focal ranges, angles, light-angle, reflection, close-up, horizontal and vertical. In other words, Machine-Gun photography to get a blanket of shots and then pick and choose later. That will increase your odds in the heat of battle.
BTW, I like that shot of the fish in the net shot low on the horizon with a telephoto lens. It’s different!

Steve K.MemberFirst of all….I WANT TO GO! 🙂
Secondly…I like the net photo as well. Great shot!
Mike…I took both my sons to AK this summer. My oldest son had never caught a sockeye and was really excited when he finely landed one. He was raised on Smokey Mountain trout where a 14 inch fish is considered a trophy. So after losing a few to broken leaders and way too small tippets….he finally landed one. He was so excited. His younger brother….who was across the river….yelled at him to hold it up so he could see it. Kevin raised the fish above his head with a big grin on his face and I snapped a quick photo. Anyhow….the shot is one of my favorites from the trip. It’s a slightly different angle to the typical grip and grin:

Mike McKeownMemberThanks Guys!! (2 x “!!”, sorry Phill)
The net shot is really cool…
Corey, love that idea…
Steve, going to give that a bash, might be a bit tough with a 18lbs trout…
Neal, this is my first trip there, those are our shop photos, I don’t want to be bold, but I want to do better than that…
