Joel ThompsonMemberVery nice boat indeed Michael! How do you like your rope seats? I was thinking about making some for my boat this winter and my biggest fear is getting the rope strung tight enough. Any recommendations on how to do it and what kind of rope is best to use?

MemberGreat looking boat Michael, especially if you got a great deal on it. I like that it matches your truck. I think that I met your son in west yellowstone a few years ago.
Dave, I would love to see pictures of your project when you finish.

MemberAdam,
I’ll be adding content to my blog following the development and construction.

Steve K.MemberDave….you forgot to mention wood boats require a lot of maintenance like continuous sanding and varnishing 😉

Michael PhillippeMemberMark – Thanks for the edit on RO boats. To set the record straight, here is their Web site:

Michael PhillippeMemberSteve – Wooden boats DO NOT require continuous sanding and varnishing.

MemberDead jealous, they are sweet looking boats, I’ve only been able to row two here down under and would love to be able to try more to form a better opinion on which one suits me. I’ll need to source a copy of AA :-[

Allan DozierMemberJoel, I built my rope seats by starting with the idea from MBB but took liberties.

MemberYeah I’d like to see a photo…
I have a Native driftboat…it’s HPDE similar to the Boulders with wood trim, rubrails and whatnot.

Joel ThompsonMemberThanks guys! Alan that is an awesome looking seat and exactly what I want! I would love to see a picture of how you clamp off the rope after it is strung up and tightened Alan if it is not too much hassle. It is blowing snow and cold here now so I am inspired to do some shop work! 🙂

Joel ThompsonMemberCraig even if it is just a small support on the back of the seat it can make a big difference on the back fatigue in my opinion. I spend a lot of 10+ hour days on the river and just that little bit can make a world of difference. I use to have a cooler as my seat and my back would be screaming by the end of a long day.

Steve K.MemberMichael…I was being facetious….notice the little “winking” icon in my post. It’s sort of an inside joke here at IA regarding wood boats. We’ve had this discussion before. The paint and varnish on my woody was applied 12 years ago so I ‘m with ya’.

I have a Native driftboat…it’s HPDE similar to the Boulders with wood trim, rubrails and whatnot. Â I’d really like to build rope seats for it this winter.
Also while we’re talking seats I’m thinking of building the rowers seat wider with no back to be able to shift my weight around. Â The Native is a little smaller, about 14.5′ centerline and the beam is 48″ at the floor and 60″ at the oarlocks so it’s not quite as stable as most of the other production boats. Â I’ve never rowed a boat that didn’t have the back support even if it’s just a little. Â So anyone that has rowed one I’d be interested in your opinions.

Allan DozierMemberJoel, here are the photos of how I clamp the end of the rope, it’s pretty simple.

As long as we are on the subject of seats and seat backs, here are some photos of my solution. Â This was my own design so call me Rube Goldberg but it has worked well for the rowers seat. Â I can lean it back for difficult rowing or set it up for slow water or while eating lunch.

I plan on living forever, so far so good.
