Just got an email from my fishing buddy on the AK trip. He ran across some video that we had forgotten about. It would be comical if I wasn’t so freakin’ scared 🙂

Make sure you check your local craigslist and search for “Pelican”. I’ve purchased two of my three Pelicans off of craigslist at substantial savings….typically half price depending on the condition of the foam.
Ditto 1400.
That’s my 1400 on the left side of photo. TThe 1450 is on the right. Due to perspective, the 1400 looks about the same size as the 1450 but in fact is slightly smaller.

Not a sling type….but I really like my Aquapac daypack. It is a roll-top design and works great for carrying your camera, a jacket, water bottle and lunch.

I used it in AK this summer and it got rained on and even dunked once. It was a lifesaver.

Here’s a couple from the October Smokies trip. I’d like to do a full pano similar to these with maybe more of the fisherman and all of the streambed in the photo.

I think it would be a neat concept to integrate a flyfising scene into an underwater pano. It would bring on a whole set of challenges though….like ripples, bubbles and refacted light. Might be fun to try though. Corey, Matt, Henry, Morsie, Graham …anyone up for a little experimenting?  😉

Let me preface my comments with the fact that I hike in the Park a lot (over 30 years) however have not done the section you’ve mentioned. I do hear from a good source that it is one of the most rugged areas of the Park.
What I did want to mention….it’s been my experience that the fishing is really tough in the Park during the winter months. the ice cold water naturally slows the bite. Of course there are always exceptions.
So…despite the slow fishing and rugged trails…the photography opportunities would…in my opinion…be unsurpassed.

Wear your wading boots and heavy jackets/coats on the plane to save some weight. I’ve even thought about wearing my waders as well. The TSA nazis would love that 🙂

I’d say they are worth much more than what you paid for them. Lefty is somewhat of an icon in the fly-fishing world. He is getting up in age but still makes regular appearances at flyfishing shows. He is “the Man” when it comes to casting a flyrod. He is quite approachable and always provides great entertainment when he conducts his casting seminars.
Next time a flyfishing show is in your area…check to see if he is appearing. Take one of the books to the show and he’ll happily autograph it. I have one of his flytying books that I purchased for my son. Lefty wrote a lengthy personalized note to my son on the inside cover.
I believe we have a few folks on the message board that use the bag-type UW housings. Check the Underwater Photography thread for some neat examples.

When I ordered my ARE bed cap, I asked for the Yakima rails to be installed. I got the 6-foot bars so I could get two Native 12s up top. With that said…I am constantly amazed at the fitment of the Yakima rack. It is topnotch all the way. I’m sure you know that. They are rock solid and I hauled my boats from ATL to the FL Keys with no problems. One word of note….I haul them upside down for long distances…but upright when going short distances (as in the photo). Upright….so I can throw the paddles and other wet and muddy gear in the boat.
