John WilliamsMemberIsn’t it great when NYC can’t hold the river hostage?
Great fish!!!!! Hopefully she isn’t too nasty come the end of the month.
JW
John WilliamsMemberThanks all for the encouragement!
Photo’s 13 and 14….HOW DO YOU DO THAT!???
Tim, ir converted D70, then a little channel swapping in PS. If you like, more here:
Love the IR stuff. Is there any other way to simulate the effect? A converted body is not even remotely in the future here.
John WilliamsMemberI love working with Maple, how long is that tail feather up top.
That’s a Lady Amherst tail feather, and it measures 37″. I buy them at my local Hobby Lobby when they have their sales on fake flowers. I think I paid about $3 for that one, and $2.50 for the red and black one behind it. I like the natural Lady Amherst feathers for nymphs – they are a lighter/grayer tone than the normal pheasant tails. I don’t think I’ve ever seen one of these for sale at a local fly shop.
I’ve seen them once or twice and let’s just say buying on3 for 3 bucks is somehwere in the neighborhood of grand larceny on your behalf and I’ll be paying a much closer attention to Hobby Lobby from now on.
Beautiful desk too! I love the maple fronts!

John WilliamsMemberColin,
Those won’t catch a damn thing so I’ll gladly take them from you and save the embarassment of them rusting in your box……We still looking at a field test date in late May?
John WilliamsMemberColin,
That’s the cool thing about 30sec exposures.
I could hit the shutter and then stand back and still have the awestruck look on my face.
I was a little frustrated because the really cool strikes with long cloud to cloud and cloud to ground seemed to stop exactly when I got my tripod set up and the camera mounted.Neal,
Thanks. You know what the say about blind squirrels and acorns though.JW
John WilliamsMemberI loved the episode from the amazon for the simple fact that he made a very bad decision about taking a shot and lost the animal and then very clearly criticized his lack of thought before taking the shot.
The show is well done and really portrays the cultural side of hunting and the traditions of the locations he is hunting.

John WilliamsMemberI stow it in Colin’s pack!
John WilliamsMemberCrappies are on the edges here in my neighborhood pond however morrels tend to run more with the grannom caddis. So at least a month to 45 days away here assuming “typical” weather patterns.
John WilliamsMemberMichael,
Not real familiar with the salt scene beyond rockfish, blues and albies but Is that big fellow a Black Drum?

John WilliamsMemberWorked with a wounded warrior outing last May that had just gotten back from that float and they pretty much summed it up this way
“trip of an {expletive} lifetime. The only downside was they were there early and the second morning woke up to 12” of fresh snow on their camp. Beyond that they got to do a little of every thing in terms of techniques from slinging big meaties to fine and far dry fly action. The group ranged from absolute rank beginners to guys who have fished all over the world and they all were well satified with the level of difficulty they faced in terms of fishing conditions.
It is definatly on my “bucket list” !

John WilliamsMemberWhat about one of those headgear mounted cameras that the action sports crowd uses?
Or possibly an overhead shot with the vice rotated 90* off of vertical and paralell to the lens.
John WilliamsMemberColin,
YOu really should have cleaned the lens before the second shot. All of that stuff is obstructing a really nice gray rainy day.You also forgot to mention that every one of those fish were taken on dry flies!

John WilliamsMemberGood to hear that the river came through it so well. I’ll have to make a point of heading back out that way this year. May follow a few days on the Savage with a couple on the Yough. Now if only there was a place to find good info on both of those rivers
John WilliamsMemberReally nice tie!
Just be careful if you ever come to the states. One of the better known Brit. tyers was coming in for a big show with some art quality and they were seized by customs. One was aspider he had over 200hrs into. Apparently the fellow at customs thought they were real bugs impaled on hooks and therefore contraband for import.
Last I knew he was still fighting to get them back.

John WilliamsMemberLast summer I paid 500 for a 12hr stripped bass trip in Maine fishing out of center console skiff. That included all gear (both light and fly tackle) bait/flies, salt liscense and a choice of one “big” shore lunch or a grazing type set up where light stuff was available for the duration of the trip. Trip was open for 1-3 anglers.
For western river floats my history is on the Missouri near Craig. $475 for a “full day” for two guys. Sandwhiches and soda provided. We floated from the dam down to Stickney (which I’m told is really a two day float) and the guide worked his butt of to keep us in “fresher water”, educate us on technique, local history and probably most important to me points to be able to come back the next day and access for wade fishing including stopping on the drive back to town to poin out specific pulloffs and landmarks. Needless to say not only did he get a decent tip but we also treated him to dinner although he would only let us pay for his first round of drinks. In my current financial situation 300-325pp for a day before tip does not seem excessive but the guy/gal
John WilliamsMemberQuote:Zach,
I find the problem is not so much in the amount of light I’m getting to hit my subjects as we have two very high intensity theatrical UV lamps blasting them. Were things seem to go astray for me is the camera either meters the very bright “lit up’ portions and then loses the rest of the detail or if I try to dial things down and get the detail I lose the effect of the “UV glow”.
Interestingly when I’m shooting pics of the varied rooms/sets in mixed lighting I am able to get what to me and the owner are very good shots (thing that funky flat kind of light from the opening of The Exorcist). Really creepy looking which fits the Haunted House feel.Neal,
I’ve never played with bracketing or HDR and my Photoshop is pretty limited (Elements 6).
John WilliamsMemberNobody mentioned carpal tunnel syndrome. I have that problem when I am on the stupid computer too long. It effects my fly casting and golf swing.
Then again birthday issue is the cause of alot of small aches and pains.
Zach’s decription of the mechanism of injury and where he felt the pain is inconsistent with carpal tunnel. Most likely it was a sprain
John WilliamsMemberZach,
Definatly a possibility. There are some tape products out there that are easy to apply with a little training and are very unobtrusive.
Kinesio Tape, for example, is some pretty amazing stuff if you have access to someone who is familiar with it. Just for reference it is the same stuff that was so scrutinized back during the Beijing Olympics with the US womens beach volleyball team.
I frequently experience some “casting elbow” type symptoms and a couple pieces of this tape applied correctly the pain is gone in less than a day and I can quickly get back to fishing.

John WilliamsMemberI guess if “all the best fishermen” are the folks shown in varied catalogs he might be on to something. But for my money it’s SIDE PRESSURE ( I wish there was a way to insert Joe Humphries voice saying that) all the way.
John WilliamsMemberColin introduced me to the night time dryfly game this summer. I will say it is much easier when you have a buddy who can stand downstream and coach you to cast by spotting the fish in the glare. It’s also amazing the fish that come out to feed and how close you can get. Never thought I’d see 3 fish over 22″ caught on dries in the span of 30 minutes.
