    @Zach
the fellow that makes the Paella holds his recipe very closely however I can tell you the squirrel (or squag if you are a ridge runner from central PA) was first marinated/brined in wild turkey then drained and rubbed with a concotion called Possum Pepper which is basicall a blend of Smoked, Sweet and Hungarian Paprika, Onion and garlic powders, Red pepper flakes, Mrs. Dash, splenda, sage and cayenne, and coarse black pepper.
After sitting for another 1-2 hours the squag is seared in an extremely hot pan designed specifically for paella with the renderings from the fattier meats. THose typically include a variety of smoked spanish sausages. After the sear it taken off heat and held with the other meats while the rice , broth and veggies are done in the same pan. about 10 minutes befor the rice is finished all of the meats along with any more delicate seafood is place bck on top to sort of steam back up to temp.

Like I said this is an all day afair when we get together at camp and is frequently accompanied with copious amounts of Jeramiah Weed, Moose Drool, the locally popular Straubs or a wicked littl concocton called Yucca.

    Zach,
For a camp food we have a tradition of making Paella at our spring and fall gatherings. THere is an entire ritual that goes into the making of this dish and it usually occupies the better part of an entire day but most importantly it MUST be cooked over open coals from a hardwood fire.

    This was from the spring

Bash the living snot out of each other is more like it – then drink beer together.

I once heard a US football commentator ask “How come more people aren’t killed playing this game”?

Great to see the US being so competitive in a world game. It would be absolutely fantastic for the game if the US and Canada were to get their shit together and expand this great game. As the T shirt says, “No Pads, No Helmets, Just Balls”.

Probably a dumb question but is the WC Union or Leauge format?

I get very limited opportunity to watch the sport but every once in a while there is a Super Leauge match on delay and it is quite entertaining.

    Zach,
Now that I think of it I may have one of the old “automatic” reel floating around. Great idea though.
I wish the “Jim Abbot” approach were a viable option however there is absolutely no muscle activation in the “bad” arm. It is infact so bad that his shoulder has an open gap of 1-2″ and literally is just hanging on the muscles.

Thanks for the info. When we get him on the water I’ll try to get some pictures up, although since the stroke he is funny about having his picture taken.

in reply to: Question about the site fidelity of farm pond bass #49004

As for fish fidelity the others have pretty much naile dmy experiences.
As for the 7 y/o perhaps the pond was doleing out a little cosmic Karma for taking the boy. Take him again and should he catch the fish bask in the pride that is sure to follow.
I had almost the exact experience on Fathers day 2010. I took my son and Dad

in reply to: Strike Indicators #48907

    Bernie,
Try playing with different types of indicators. If I am going out for a day of dedicated nymphing I will use the indicators that look like tiny hollow tube and jam them on my leader knots. THis in effect gives me 4-5 individual strike indicators with very little need to move stuff around on my leader. Teh up shot being the closer you indicator is to the hook the more readily it will indicate a take. If you nymph enough you will quickly develope an instinctive feel for when a fish has taken you fly and never assume that a wiggle in you leader was “just a rock” gently set on every twitch of the leader (not just the indicator). YOu’ll be surprised how many “rocks” look and fight just like trout.

I’ve been using the Loon UV Wader cure for 5 -6 years in the same manner. Absolutely bomb proof scud backs.
Just don’t tie in direct sun with the Loon stuff. It will set up right on the tip of the tube.
    Great Vid Zach.

in reply to: Multiple use lens #72468

John, thank you. It would be great if you could take several lens and just try them out for a day to see which one you like the best.

Maybe this is way naive of me but would renting a lens: Say the Cannon70-300 L for your trip not be a reasonable work around on this issue. Then you get the option of trying the lens in the exact circumstances you want it for with no long term obligation and a relatively small outlay. I.E. you get to try before you buy!

in reply to: Scale Buildup on Fly Lines #48464

OK stupid question is this mineral scale build up or just dirty water?
If mineral scal how about a dousing with white vinegar than a quick rinse and on to the micro abrasive pad.

The vinegar does wonders at breaking down lime scale from the hard waters in my neck of the woods and shouldn’t be so harsh as to degrade the coatings on the line.
    Just a thought.

Holy cow.  I bet you could match this hatch with a small floating Rapala.

Rebel actually makes a cicada but yes the rapal would work reeeeeeeeeeeaal well!
Or just spin and clip some black deer with a collar of orange and knock ’em silly!

in reply to: Salmon: Running the Gauntlet #48228

    I’ll agree. Very well done.
I never appreciated the journey some of those fish undertake in the name of procreation.
