noneMemberHope to see some interesting pictures of the Orvis facility. Orvis was in my youth the company that made all fly fishermen in Holland drool, including me as a kid.
I saw a picture of the bamboo poles drying which wil eventualy turn into Orvis bamboo fly rods? More please!
Jay
Ps. Aren’t you waaay to busy Zach? 😉
noneMemberHmm… a big dilemma for rod companies like Scott (and Winston): stay with the traditional style rods or go with the higher modulus & faster rods?
What I don’t like from the picture I see (IRL can be different) is the reel seat. It looks very bulky (not refined) and cheap. The rods costs almost $700! For this amount of money I want to see very stylish cosmetics. It just looks the same as a $250 price level series from Scott.
About the fast, faster, the fastest rods:
What’s the use for these ever stiffer rods? Everyone now has a fast rod so why get an even faster rod?
Do we want to battle hurricane winds to cast the big hopper in the underbanks?…
Don’t get me wrong. I love casting fast rods and casting TIGHT loops.Jay
noneMemberBecause of this hard click I dropped the idea of getting the Ross Gunisson as my reel of choice a decade ago.
The Ross reel looked (and still does) very handsome, built to last and had a great drag. But the clicker was so noisy!…Now when I fish my bamboo rods I prefer matching it with a classic reel being either an Orvis CFO III, Hardy Perfect or a Winston Perfect. And guess what? These reels are NOISY! But a sweet noise it is when a fish runs.
So, maybe you should just enjoy the clicker and start catching those big fish! 😉

noneMemberMan, that sucks… Â >:(
I think everything you take for granted are the ones one should take care of. Just because it makes life so nice & easy that you forget about it. But I won’t get philosophical on my third day as an entrepreneur  😉
I guard my rods (and there are old and treasured ones) with my life. Nobody is allowed to move the tubes but me! Â ;D
take care!

noneMemberHello, my name is Jay Lee. Living in The Netherlands. 39 years old, educated as a real estate engineer, now working as a property  developer. I just started my own business in property development & consultancy.
I started fly fishing when I was around 14.
My favourite destinations in Europe are (southern) Germany and Austria. This area in the Alps is just right for gin clear streams/rivers and great scenery.
I love the Rocky Mountains area (Montana & Alberta) too. I’ve visited this area about 6 times so far.I like to visit forums where the owner is active, open minded.
Zach is also a nice guy too so it’s fun to hang around here.Jay
noneMemberI received my rod (same one as Cameron) today.
Wow, what a nifty little rod it is!
It casts a #4 line superbly: smooth as an eel! What really amazes me is the back bone of this fella. It casts a 40 feet with ease and still maintaing smoothness.5 pieces is just perfect for taking it along back packing, traveling when fishing isn’t really planned yet you never know what you encounter, etc.
The small grip is perfect for my small hands too. It is paired with a Winston Perfect reel  (the small one) and it’s a handsome set too.
Can’t wait to try it out on the German graylings & trouts mid September!

noneMemberHow about wide angle mode?
Wide angle shots are rarely included in the specs when people look for a compact camera. I for one like to get close to the object yet still want to see enough of the surroundings.

noneMemberI am looking at some new laptops, with a 13″ MacBook being high on the list. Â My only concern is i use AutoCAD on a daily basis for work, and its windows only.
…. on a small laptop, as most of that work will get done back in the office with the big monitor.
Parallels is an option indeed as Zach mentioned. But Parallels works as a program next to Mac OSX so it is handy to switch and back, but the performance will be hit. Do get TONS of memory though. I’d say 2 Gb RAM is a must to work with Parallels.
You can also use Apple’s (free) solution: Boot camp. Boot camp allows you to work in Windows mode full speed. But no switching back and forth to Mac OSX. You’ll need to reboot to go back to Mac OSX.
If you aren’t designing sky scrapers on Autocad, I’d say it will work fine on the MacBook. Especially if you hook it up to a big screen at your office.
Let us know how it all worked out!
Jay (the other one from The Netherlands!)
noneMemberHey Jay ( Â ;D ),
you might check your memory in your machine. Corrupted (=broken) memory is a high suspect on machines that start behaving oddly (crashing, kernel panics, etc.) all the sudden. I don’t know how a memory get’s broken but it seems that they tend to get broke due to voltage ups/downs (thunderstorm?).
I’m still using my G4 iMac 17 inch for about 4-5 years and although it’s still going strong, it does shows it’s age with processor intensive tasks. I hope to get the new iMac, but maybe I’ll get a MacBook first for my business I’m setting up.

noneMemberCameron, any new insights on the rod?
Have you tried casting different lengths? Different conditions?Jay
noneMemberJoel,
sounds like a wonderful (work) experience!
Weren’t you by the way nervous by having such experienced clients on board?About the rod:
I remember George Anderson being a Loomis fan. I think I still got an issue of Fly Fisherman from the mid 1980’s with an article about the favourite #4 rod of some fly fishing hot shots.Jay
noneMemberI ordered the Continental Tourer which is a five piece seven foot three inch four weight. Â I plan on using it as a travel/backpacking rod. Â
Â
Nice looking rod Cameron!
This was the exact same rod I have been thinking about getting one.I’m really impressed by the looks of it.
How can the action be described (I know it’s almost impossible).
Can’t wait to read your stuff after you’ve been fishing with it.I too want this rod for traveling when fishing isn’t a real plan but still bring along a very packable rod + lanyard.
Jay
noneMemberHesus Maria! I don’t like you already… 😮

Ps. Great fish & pictures!
noneMemberNo experience by myself. But there are quite a lot (former Loop) Danielsson owners here in Europe.
It’s a crowded place where these reels are priced ($300+ range). They are good reels, no doubt.
It all comes down to personal view on design/image. The large arbor reels Danielsson pioneered are so common now, it’s a non-issue in terms of more or less retrieving speed. These reels match/look great on high performance rods & brands. On a more traditional rod or brand (like Winston or Scott) I’d say a less pronounced reel design might fit better. Again, personal preference.

noneMemberI mostly fish for trout simply because there isn’t any here in The Netherlands!
So I travel abroad to neighbouring countries (Germany & Austria mostly).Pike fishing is pretty good here. No bass like large mouth or small mouth here.
I’ll use my Z-axis for streamer fishing for trout, ultra light saltwater along the shores and everything in between.
Jay
noneMemberI think the line on my reel is a Orvis Wonderline. Could be a Sage Performance Taper too.
Well anyway, it casts great.I thought about getting the saltwater version of the 690 XP, but I never heard any raves about it. Then the Z-axis rods arrived. Was/is the 690 XP any good?
What are you going to use your rod for?
Jay
noneMemberWow! Pretty amazing fish!
noneMemberGraylings seem to have a slightly downwards pointed mouth.
There are some more pictures of European grayling at my posting about my trip last november:
http://bassbug.blogspot.com/2006/11/november-graylings.htmlJay
Ps. that’s a handsome grayling too!
noneMemberIsn’t the arctic grayling and the regular grayling similar, besides the first one being smaller?
Jay
noneMemberThe recipe for the woolly mullet was in the latest Fly Tyer magazine. I’m doubt it’s legal to post this information sourced from the magazine, and I can’t find it anywhere on the web, do you get fly tyer?
Hey Ian,
I used to get Fly Tier but I stopped it because I was getting way too much fly fishing magazines.
Nowadays I’m only getting Fly Fisherman.A good close up of the fly helps a lot too to figure out what material to use.
Keep us posted on the fishing with these flies!Jay
