Here are some pictures of one of the boxes I’ll be taking to Baja with me. The great majority of these flies were tied by Peter Smith at S.S. Flies.

Well you did ask for pike flies that actually work…

I haven’t thrown these at any pike, I imagine they’d work, but I can also imagine a lot of other flies working for pike.

I don’t think any of these flies would hold up really well with repeated pike encounters.

    Nice flies Ian.

Have you ever tried any Icelandic Sheep Hair AKA Streamer Hair? I’ve started using it on clousers and the stuff works great. No wonder its sometimes called secret streamer hair. I do a Shad pattern with white bottom with pearl Angel hair mixed in. A big clump of pearl krystal flash in the middle. Grey with Polar Ice Angel Hair mixed in on top. The result is a very translucent looking fly that looks as much like a Shad in the water as anything I’ve seen. The fish love it too. You can tie it small or up to 6″. Great material!

    Mike,

Have you had problems with it fouling? I tie a few strands of matching bucktail under the streamer hair to help it hold its shape a little better. Recently, though, I’ve been tying all of my Clousers with bunny strips. I can’t layer in Krystal Flash like with the craft fur/hair patterns, but three to four strands tied along the sides seems to give them enough flash and pass as a lateral line.

I almost forgot, nice looking flies, Ian. Will you be primarily targeting roosters from the beach?

Yes it does foul some but I’m mostly using it for 3.5 to 4″ flies so that helps. Like you, I found that a pinch of bucktail in the middle helps prevent tangles. Something else that helps big time is de barbing the hook.

I watched it spank a deer hair Clouser the other day. I think the material just sinks better and was getting deeper maybe?

    Excellent looking flies.

Mike or Bryan – Do either one of you have a picture of the flies you’re tying with icelandic sheep hair?

Mike – I hadn’t really thought about the barb being a factor in keeping a fly fouled, but it makes sense… I’ll give it a try.

Bryan – We’ll mainly be targeting roosters and jacks off of the beach. We might go out in a panga one of the days if we can find someone competent to take us out. It sounds like you need to be pretty careful who you go out with unless you want to troll. Do you have any pictures of your bunny clouser?

Cameron – Thanks, wish I had tied the flies. I don’t really have much free time these days. I figured the investment in fly tying materials and hook plus my time more than equaled the price I paid to have these tied for me. Peter is an incredibly knowledgeable fly tier. I’ve always considered myself a competent fly tier, but I was blown away by his understanding of all the intricacies of tying, it made me realize just how much I have to learn.

Here is a large one I tied for Muskie fishing. The one I’m using now for Striper and such is about 3.5 to 4″ and grey and white with lots-o-Angel hair mixed in.

    Wow, great looking flies Ian!

How about some recipes for these flies? Some might want to try to tie them too. I’ll try them.

    Hey Jay,

    Here’s a link for the rasta: http://www.bajafly.com/Flies/rasta.htm

The bugeye bait looks like it’s tied with white bucktail, wing colored super or unique hair, wing colored bucktail, flashabou and krystal flash, and peacock herl.

The recipe for the woolly mullet was in the latest Fly Tyer magazine. I’m doubt it’s legal to post this information sourced from the magazine, and I can’t find it anywhere on the web, do you get fly tyer?

Hope that helps a little, two out of three isn’t too bad.

    Hey Ian,

I used to get Fly Tier but I stopped it because I was getting way too much fly fishing magazines.
Nowadays I’m only getting Fly Fisherman.

A good close up of the fly helps a lot too to figure out what material to use.
Keep us posted on the fishing with these flies!

    Ian,

Here are a few of the rabbit strip Clousers in different colors. I tie most in flesh/tan/olive/white combinations. The third is tied in sculpin colors and I substituted some clipped red flashabou (gills) for krystal flash. The fourth has been a good bass combination.

    Cool flies Brian.

Out of curiosity, why not just tie double bunnies and add dumbbell eyes at the head?

    Thanks, and no reason, really.

    Haha.

What are you using to glue the rabbit strips together at the tail. I can’t find tear mender anywhere unless I want to order online.
