    Here’s my G2 905 with the Perfect and the Bauer M1.

    The Perfect looks nice on it!

    Nice view here Will.

    I agree that most rods made for European fishing (like long lake rods or two handed rods) doesn’t appeal to or are usable for American & way of fishing in the US.

    However most European use US made rods, much more than European ‘made’ rods because the US rods are much more advanced (latest technology) and plain sexy.

    What I find surprising is how many fly fisherman in the US are mediocre in casting as well as fishing technique. The guiding business must be one of the reasons? Here we just figure it out ourself, no guide taking us to fish the streams.

    That’s interesting question: skills vs equipment.

    About the skills:
    I think the European fishermen developed local skills that are pretty effective. I think this is mainly because most european waters were isolated in terms of exchange of techniques etc. I mean all European countries have their trout filled waters, they just improved their technique for their own waters. Only the Dutch people had to go abroad since we don’t have mountains here. The isolated fishermen developed techniques that work with their specific conditions. There are basically several types of fisheries. I’d say British vs Scandinavian vs Baltic (incl. Poland) vs ‘mainland’.
    Let me think & read about this and I might come back later with more.

    About the equipment:
    You are right. The American fly fishing industry is miles ahead of the European. Maybe it’s because there are more fly fishermen in the US (= more business to be made). When I started fly fishing (mid 80’s) there were only two major brands I remember: Hardy and Orvis. Hardy somehow managed to stop their development. Maybe because of the economic low times during the late 80’s and up to mid 90’s. By then the US industry were miles ahead with technology. Mainly spin offs from the space industry?

    Also the English (other European countries were almost non-existent on fly fishing industry) aren’t known for their search for new idea’s & technologies. Look at the typical English car brands. They are all gone due to not evolving & improving their cars: Rover, MG, Rolls Royce, TVR, etc. They thought their old technology is still good enough. Well they are well proven, but the public wants better & more advanced cars! So all British cars are bankrupt or sold to foreign companies.

    Lets make a list of lines that are soft and stay soft in cold conditions.

    * Rio Selective Trout
    * Sage Quiet Taper (?)
    * Cortland Sylk (but has floating problems…)
    * SA XPS (oops, I forgot this one indeed!)
    * …..

    Please add!

    They can replace the handle and touch up some scars as well.

    There is another that the fellows on the fiberglass board rave about from the Hook & Hackle site online.  The line is supposed to be made by Cortland and is a mix of the 333 line and the Sylk line.  With all discounts the fly line ends up being $28 and they come in a nice green color

    I think I read that it’s just a 444 Peach in a different color made for H&H.

    Zach- Thanks a bunch for your input.  I’ve been buying this stuff for too long…its time for a change.  If you had to pick a 3wt line, for trout, that’s going to be used on a graphite and bamboo rod, which would you choose (between the Rio and the SA).  Also, I’m just a little curious to see if you have tried the Cortland SYLK lines and if so, what you think of them.

    Not trying to butt in but I’d say go for the SA XPS. This is a really nice soft line with very little line memory. It casts nice on a slower rod too, so it will go nice on a bamboo too.

    The Rio Selective Trout is also a softer line. Haven’t tried it much because I justgot it.

    The Sylk, I’ve read too many different stories (sticking, tip not floating well) that I won’t bother until the good news appears more often than bad news.

    Interesting and weird together Zach.
    How can the same reel sell for such a difference in price? Minor differences due to monitary rates is normal but this much?

    What is the problem with your reel?
    Maybe you should just send it in with a note what the problem is.

    I once sent a Ross reel (Gunnisson) back to Ross and they just sent me a new one. Super service.
    I can’t imagine that such a company as Abel won’t do you a similar service.

    Well, I’m sure the iMac will keep you company for quite some time.
    Adding some extra RAM is a smart thing to do. Especially if you consider running several programs at once. I always have about 4-5 programs running at once.

    The jump from 15 inch screen to a 20 inch TFT will be mindblowing! But it gets used to VERY quickly though! Although the 24 inch iMac is H U G E, I think I’ll apprecaite the extra screen real estate. Especially all those IMs like Proteus (this nifty prg handles MSN, ICQ, Yahoo all at once!), Skype etc it’s nice to have them in view and not get covered by windows (no not Windows!) / other programs.

    Hardy reels (or Hardy in general) are getting too pricey indeed…
    Is it that they are try to make up for the lost years (90’s)?

    Yet still the 6 inch difference makes quite a difference in how the rod feels. Especially the tip-swing is noticeable of these longer rods vs the regular 9 ft’ers.

    I just got the Scott G2 905 I ordered. Man this thing is a beauty!
    I usually use a Bauer M1 for my #4 & #5 rods, but I’ll definately fish with the Perfect as well. It looks very handsome on the G2. A bit like a hot chick in a classic hot rod!  ;D

    What this means for my stroke is two things: #1, I’ve developed a technique that I’ve shared with a very limited number of people that lets me shoot a very long backcast very high into the air.  It works, and I’ve never seen anyone else do it, but I’m holding it back until I really dial it in, when I will write an article on it.

    Hmm… I’m getting VERY curious now. Maybe you can show us on a videoclip?

    I prefer having spools containing 100m rather than 30m. I change my tippet quite often while nymphing so with the regular 30m spools I’m through it in 1 day.

    So what’s the deal Zach, you can get them cheaper or for free? Because I’m interested!
