noneMemberWell it sure has slowed down here?…
noneMemberWhat really disturbs me (most of the replies) is how commercial interest of a fly shop comes into the discussion rather than ‘just’ to discuss what we all love: talk about gear.
First Yellowstone Angler is trying to gain/keep attention to their shop to survive. Anyone remember how one after the other fly shop closed their doors the past few years?…
Second, what is wrong points going to brands which put a lot of R&D (no guarantee by the way…) and marketing to make the best rods that can make? And what’s wrong fly shops trying to sell the best rods they can get while still looking out for that one special rod which doesn’t cost $600+?… No fly shop will sell gear which they don’t believe in or did you think they will sell you gear which sucks and expect to consider doing the right job?…
Finally, George is no novice when it comes to rod design and casting. The conclusions in the shootout is his opinion. He and his men who did the testing are probably a few levels in terms of casting above the average fly fishermen out there…
One last point:
We owe George a big thank you for his efforts in the fly fishing history. So much for my effort to have a lively discussion here… I’ll think twice before doing such a thing next time.
noneMemberOK Zach.
No more discussion on rod test.
noneMemberMy favorite magnifier for old eyes is the Flex Spex (http://www.flexspex.com). These flexible arms clips to the side of the hat and can be moved out of the way when you don’t need them.
noneMemberMine arrived today!
Thanks Zach.

noneMemberThis one felt like a really nice dry fly stick.
I’ve always wondered why rods are called dry fly rods?…
noneMemberIs ‘saltwater’ camo on the 6 panel also possible?
noneMember6 panel camo
noneMemberAdd me (again)
noneMemberNobody?…
noneMemberNo problem Matt!
noneMemberI wasn’t trying to start an Android vs iPad war, but since the ultra high res (2048 x 1536) screen of the new iPad seems to match the needs of professional photographers more than any other tablet on the market I thought you might have to see it for yourself.
Btw, the connection discussion is pretty old. Get a USB / sd card connection kit at eBay for less than $5 incl. shipping and you’re all done. Same goes for Hdmi cable etc.
Don’t forget the quality & quantity of apps, especially tablet dedicated apps.
noneMemberYes sorry the micro 4/3
You should check out the reviews on various photography sites and videos on Vimeo and YouTube. The video capabilities of the micro 4/3 cameras (including the Sony NEX series although these are Sony’s propriety lenses) these days are amazing.
noneMemberFor photography work why didn’t you pick up the new iPad with the brilliant retina display?
noneMemberAbout lightweight rods:
Almost all productions rods, especially the more affordable brands, on the market have horrible proportions. Just have a look at their light line weight (#2-4) rods. They all have HUGE grips with HUGE reel seats. The same grip & reel seats they use on their #5-6 rods. It looks like Paris Hilton: a lady with shoe size 10…
noneMemberPretty funny to read how many of you criticize the Shootout.
I am pretty sure that George Anderson knows what he is talking about. And I’m sure he is a great caster as well. Together I have no doubt their Shooutout tells the differences between the various rods. Now, nobody tells you to buy the rods that are tested. You just fish the rod you like and nobody gets a bad mood.
I for one like to cast the new fastish rods for sheer casting enjoyment (tight & smooth loops, 80+ ft distances, etc.) but I like to fish with a moderate action rod. most of my rods are golden oldies (Sage LL, SP, Orvis Superfine, Scott G2, bamboos). And I rarely cast more than 50 feet when fishing.
noneMemberA slightly different model but basically the same jaw locking method from Dyna-king: the Professional.
This vise is a real work horse. No flimpsy parts. Together with the heavy pedestal it will get the job done. The thing I don’t like about the Regal vise is that there is only one tension that’s held by the jaw. I don’t like the idea of having a 16 hook held with the same force as with a 3/0 hair bug. Basically every bunch of size jumps the tension needs to be adjusted. With the Dyna-king’s this is possible by turning the knob at the jaw.
noneMemberYes and my iPhone 4.
Pretty amazing indeed what these gadgets are capable of.
noneMemberSorry, really looking for a Loomis
