Andrew, they are landlocked, running up the rivers on a “spawning” run from large impoundments.

TWiles, all the fish came on klouser minnows–gray/white and a few on olive/white.

Interesting topic, and one that is on my own mind lately.  I’ve enjoyed reading the thread–great shots.  My earliest memories are of fishing, and I have fished since I can walk.  My daughter is 3 1/2 months, and we’ve recently started “fishing” together.  I try to keep in mind that the fishing is for my sake, and not compromise safety and comfort for her.  Initial trips were just a few casts.  I found the front-loader carrier is pretty sub-optimal for casting.

When she could hold her head up well, we started using a backpack.  One good thing about this: you can take it off and set it down and it functions as a seat.  I feel it’s still pretty early for this, so we limit our time fishing in it to 30 minutes or less.  When we caught these white bass, Miranda was surprised to see me keeping some to eat.  She’s always thought of me as strictly C&R.

One other thing that works for us is fishing stroller-accessible areas.

Whenever she’s interested, I expect to start her using bait for bluegills.  But even earlier, I hope we can pursue stuff like crayfish, toads, insects, etc. by hand and net.  The gut-level kick of getting the thing in hand, whatever it is–that’s what I hope to impart.

Gary Sundin…that grass carp photo is killer!  What fly did you use?  Do tell…

A 1″ strip of green foam tied on #10 dry fly hook with a bundle of green rubber centipede legs dangling down over the hook.

For the theoretical question, I’ll take the beauty over the beast about 70/30, I suppose.  In reality, I’ll fish the pretty place when I can (once a month or so), but I’ll fish dirty every 2-3 days to avoid withdrawal.  I think ugly places kind of grow on you.

    I like fishing here.

    And next to this pipe

    And under these bridges

After several tries, I finally caught this grassy today in an ugly pond near my work.  First ever on fly for me.  All thanks to ugly places.

The local run is picking up.  Miranda and I got 3 in 30 minutes working a little eddy from the bank.  Elsewhere, I read good reports from the Etowah.
