I did OK last year on a size 12 Stimulator and either a 16 Beadhead Gold Ribbed Hare’s Ear or a 14 or 16 Beadhead Tellico nymph.

Most of the time on the Clinch I’m fishing a size 18 tungsten Zebra midge under a size 14 Parachute Hare’s Ear.

On the South Holston I like to use a 14 parachute adams with a size 18 english pheasant tail as the dropper. You have the nymph a about a foot to two feet off the dry.
It works well when you have a hatch of BWO.

Heavily weighted black woolly bugger with a gray hare’s ear nymph…but I guess that really wouldn’t qualify as a “dropper”. My favorite dry/dropper combo is a HHAP (Hot Hayne Parachute – a local fly) dropped to a soft hackle red brassie, PT nymph or hare’s ear.

    Hot Hayne Parachute “AuSable”

    to…

    or a squirrel tail nymph

Neal I think this is kind of a tough question. For me it depends on what time of year I am fishing and what water I am fishing. Not to mention what is hatching on the water you are fishing at that particular time. For instance very soon here in Montana we will start seeing a lot of Skwalas on the water and right behind them we will see a good amount of March Browns. I have had great luck fishing a Skwala dry with a size 12 or 14 BH Pheasantail in this situation. Later on in the Spring we see the Salmon fly hatch which normally the Salmon Fly dry and stand alone but if action is slow you could tie a BH golden stone off it and likely be hooked up a lot as the Goldens come out to play about the same time as the Salmon Flies do! (I also like dropping a red or pink San Juan worm this time of year but don’t tell anybody

I had a chance to fish with the dropper system (shown below).  I found it very helpful to have preloaded dropper rigs waiting in the pocket.  I think it would be very easy to make one of these yourself.  Cut a piece of balsa wood about 1.5-2 inches width and 6 inches long.  Glue closed cell foam on both sides.  Then just pre-tie your dropper setups and wrap around. However, the version shown below has these little grooves on the side which are actually important because they hold the line from unwinding.

    July or August

When I am fishing during the day in summer (I usually fish at night for browns), a hopper with a little sparkle shrimp dropper, #14 or smaller. That’s right – shrimp. I have had many trout come up and look at the hopper and take the shrimp on the way back down. Works better than any nymph I have tried

    Godspeed,

    Bob

I don’t have a favourite… I have good combinations and they will work in different environments…

    Hopper – Copper – Dropper = fast water, 2 – 4 feet deep, overcast, midday…
Stimulator – Caddis – Dropper = fast water, 3 – 5 feet deep, mid morning to mid afternoon, dirty water…
Addams – Nymph = slow water, 2 – 4 feet deep, morning and afternoon, clean water

In very shallow runs or pocket waters.
    High Floating/Skating Dry – un-weighted nymph = all day

    In a heavy hatch.
Small Stimulator – hatch match the following – CDC/Seals fur emerger (un-weighted) – lightly weighted nymph.

    Stonefly hatch…
Stimulator – hatch match the following – CDC Stone Fly Emerger – Stone fly nymph…

    Cadis Hatch
Stimulator – CDC Sparkle Pupa – V-Rib / Lava Lace bead head cadis.

Last but not least… fished in all conditions…
Small Stimulator (14 or 16) – lightly weighted Orange Seals Fur, Hot Spot, PTN, (16) – Lightly weighted ZAK ( a great all round mayfly pattern that will account for 50 percent of my fish, I will get the recipe, if you want it…)

    when night fishing..

I like to use a big midge (size 12) for weight, run a dropper scud or sowbug. Even a large egg pattern depending on how deep I need to get it..

    isn’t big midge an oxymoron?
