I was just thinking about the whole conversion or adoption of fly fishing, I never had anyone in my family who flyfished, at least not with me.

I didn’t start fly fishing until I was in my mid 30s.
For me I think it as much a case of spin/bait fishing simply not offering anything new anymore and I needed something new to challenge me.

Little did I know when I bought that first 7′ 5wt orvis for small creeks, that Id soon be shelving all my existing gear and fishing for everything with flies thereafter. I have a ton of gear that hasnt seen the light of day in years

Its with great reget that I didnt come into it earlier, especially as when I was a teen Id inherited two 4 peice boo rods, with silk lines, woods cases and all which I abused and broke and eventually lost. Never knowing what it was I  had or was doing. Blasphemy!

Interesting topic, and one that is on my own mind lately.  I’ve enjoyed reading the thread–great shots.  My earliest memories are of fishing, and I have fished since I can walk.  My daughter is 3 1/2 months, and we’ve recently started “fishing” together.  I try to keep in mind that the fishing is for my sake, and not compromise safety and comfort for her.  Initial trips were just a few casts.  I found the front-loader carrier is pretty sub-optimal for casting.

When she could hold her head up well, we started using a backpack.  One good thing about this: you can take it off and set it down and it functions as a seat.  I feel it’s still pretty early for this, so we limit our time fishing in it to 30 minutes or less.  When we caught these white bass, Miranda was surprised to see me keeping some to eat.  She’s always thought of me as strictly C&R.

One other thing that works for us is fishing stroller-accessible areas.

Whenever she’s interested, I expect to start her using bait for bluegills.  But even earlier, I hope we can pursue stuff like crayfish, toads, insects, etc. by hand and net.  The gut-level kick of getting the thing in hand, whatever it is–that’s what I hope to impart.
