You can find an old sewing machine w/ foot pedal for under ~$50. Gut it and mount the internal motor on a block of wood. Jimmy up a chuck to hold plastic fly line spools and you are all set.

D.Thanks for the input guys, but I am seeking something less labor intensive, as in put my foot on the pedal and it takes off. Basically, I am trying to get some ideas for constructing exactly what would be used in a flyshop, without giving $700 to buy one. I am thinking a motor (w/ forward and reverse), with a side-mounted wheel or spare spool, affixed to a piece of ply and a base, and a spool 12-16″ away.

Why do you want the Sage Launch? And I am not trying to be rude, just get you to think about your purchases. Do you favor this rod b/c of its price-point? If that is the case, there are plenty of other rods on the market for the same coin. Your best bet is to cast/fish rods before you buy. But someone just starting in this sport is not too likely to know what to look for in terms of quality and/or feel when they walk into a fly shop. Then you are stuck at the mercy of the guys in the shop…which can be good or bad. So, your best option is to go fish with a friend and use his gear until you begin to understand how and why certain rods behave the way they do. Also ask yourself what species of fish you are most likely to be hunting most often. That 8wt. you have will work on LMB at Lake Fork, but it is worthless in Zone 1 at BB.Dusty

I talked to him last night…and…uhm…fishing was not on his mind. Something about chasing some skirts. I think he has been landing some fish, though not what he had planned. They seem to be small and few, but he did get some fish at the Beaver Ponds on the way to Middle Fork trail, in R.R.D.
I bought a Petzl Taktikka for a recent trip to chase Gila Trout, and this light did not disappoint. I have always stuck with Petzl, but this new model is the Duck’s Nuts. It has four colored lenses, and it has four different power settings, along with strobe. I bought mine at BP for around $55, but you might have them throw it in the box the next time you get something to read.

Orvis discontinued the Zero Gravity rods not too long ago, replaced by the ZG Helios. Some shops still have some original Zero Gravitys hanging around. That is what I would be looking for if I were in your boat. But if you are wanting other sticks <$400, look to TFO, Echo, Beulah. If you can find a Zero Gravity, cast it along with a T3; you will see and feel the difference.
