    Rick,
Proactive protection for the wife’s flowers-I like the way you think! Perhaps a bit manipulative, but nonetheless, I dig your thought process.

No, not kidding about the wabbit; he/she does exist. I may have embellished about the mocking, helped considerably by wheat and barley. Regarding the pelt, am I correct in assuming I could apply some borax to the skin side, let it do its work, then make use of the skin.

And no, I did not get to go out and deer hunt this year as I focused on fishing, but bunny-foo-foo is not my answer to that. I apologize to any offended bunny activists.

Oh yea, I forgot. It must be done w/o the wife knowing. “I guess he found a cute girl bunny and they made a family. Now, I must tie some flies. Love you.”

    He is still mocking me!

Here, one does not have to wait until he or she is able to buy a 5th; we are all issued firearms at birth. But the neighbors, non-Texans, could be offended, and being a constant student of PC, I have no desire to upset the non-meateaters. OK, that is a blatant lie, but one must be careful in such pursuits.

Your snare of choice? Pics? Suggestions?

Give me a call, and I’ll hook you up with whatever you need.

For Christmas, my wife, whom I love even more now, procured for me one of Paul’s originals. I was completely shocked, which is a change since typically I am forced to circle the desired product in a catalogue and accidentally leave it on her desk. Anyway, I now proudly sport a PP painting next to my tying desk, but I will not dirty his work with a digital photo.

Hey Paul, show ’em what I have hanging here.

I also have a Peak, and as of yet, have been unable to break it. The base is large and solid, with full rotary that accomplishes all I need it to. Plus, the price point on Peak vises is awesome, even if one is forced to pay retail. If you get a Peak, and happen to teach any type of tying class in any venue, it is quite simple to get on Peak’s Pro Team.

There ya go Zach! Also, I heard but cannot confirm as I have never owned a Renzetti, that they use bushings rather than the bearings found in the mechanics of a Peak.

    That is an awesome pic.

    Zach,
Have you ever heard of Billy Munn? He lives in Bridgeport, TX, and he is an awesome Bass-Bug Tyer. He does have a video out, and makes some shows at flyshops around the DFW Metro. He is the epitome of good-ol’-boy fly-tying and a damned nice individual as well. If you, or the other IA brethren, would like some deer hair-spinning action, look this guy up!

San pedro crabs, crazy charlies, even a Clouser has been tied for such pursuits. also, larger Hare’s Ears. I have been told to stay away from flashy materials and to not even bother if the carp are not feeding in shallows; that is to say, one ought not waste time casting to cruising carp, but I am sure others have diff. info., so, take from this what you can, and don’t be shy with the results.
    Good luck mate!,

    Hey Zach,
Your efforts are very much appreciated; the shirt will be proudly worn, especially as all I tend to need in Dallas is a few T’s to get me through the winter.

in reply to: Kids are amazing #22197

OK y’all, I’ll be the bad guy; I will be the one whom exhibits the jealousy we are all likely feeling. I have been in similar situations while watching young’uns fish. And I will be honest, I tend to get a little miffed when a kid is out-catching me! After all, I have all the books, the gear, and the desire, if not lust.

But after I get over myself, it is awesome to see a kid light up like that. I just always feared that it set a dangerous precedent for the rest of their life: If a kid catches a 23 inch + trout pre-pubescent, what do they have to look forward to, so far as Trout?

    Dusty,
    Bonsoir

Great story Neal; even better reminder of perspective/priority, whichever one prefers.

    in reply to: I cast a Helios today… #21350

I think that some may have misunderstood my intentions. The entire point of my post was to ask my fly brethren their opinions of this rod. I made it known where I work simply b/c I did not want any future grief or accusations of pushing the product on this blog. Now, I am almost sorry I even brought up the matter as it has sent some reeling (pun noted but not intended.) Personally, I could not care less what rod/reel one uses or why: I was simply asking for opinions…

Thanks for the honesty Seafood. But when you live in a place like Dallas, one that does not seem to support as much Flyfishing as other parts of the country, you gotta do what you can to scratch the itch. Plus, it was a definite step in the right direction from the White River Fly Shop at Bass Pro. I just thought I would let it be known, as Iam sure it will pop out somehow in the future anyway. I didn’t want to seem like I was pushing the merchandise, just wanted some true opinions of the rod if anyone had any to share.

Thanks guys, both great suggestions. As I said, I am looking to slay some Stripers at Texoma, but I am also looking to get some below the dam at Possum Kingdom lake, sort-of a sleeper-spot for some of us around here. A few years ago, an individual pulled out a 60lb.+ striper from below the dam, (lead-slinger) and he had the state record, until he shot his mouth off and the wrong people discovered he used a Rainbow trout as bait. Also, since 9/11, state agencies around here have restricted how close one can get to a spillway below the dam. In short, there is a wire we cannot pass, by any means, so I have to get a juicy morsel as close as possible. That Rainbow imitation looks like a fitting candidate.

in reply to: Lefty Kreh Contact Info Needed #20809

    Brett,

You can try contacting Tailwaters flyshop in Dallas. Within the last month or so they had Lefty there for a seminar/book signing. They have also had Flip Pallot. He could be slated for another one soon. But if you are going to be in Dallas and are in need of casting lessons, you do not necessarily have to get them from Lefty. I can think of at least five FFF CCIs right now, all of which, I would imagine, would be infinately cheaper than Lefty.

Also, if you are going to go the TFO route, and this may be unorthodox, but see if you can get some time with Rick Pope, TFO president. He has shown me things that books and countless DVDs probably could not have. I have never met a better caster or one whom understands the workings of a rod/line better.

in reply to: Whatcha been reading lately? #48026

If I had to have only one book, at this time, there is no doubt it would be Gary Borger’s Presentation. I have read precious few chapters, but I have learned a year’s worth thus far. If you do a search of his name on Ebay, you will find a limited Ed. of 250 copies, which comes with a hand tied fly from the author, a signed leather-bound copy, and a lithograph from his son, the Shadow-casting Jason. I received this for my b-day last month, and it was the best 100 bucks I told my wife to spend!
