So today I am fishing in my float tube and after about 4 hours I had only landed two nine inch trout.  Almost everyone I floated past said they were having a bad day also.  A few quotes I heard were, “tough fishing today”, “these fish are smart”, and “try a Y2K, I caught one using it earlier”.

I was just reaching the take out point and my feet were cold (I need get some of those wool socks!).  There are about 20 fisherman standing there and nobody is catching any fish.  Then I see this kid about 10 years old standing about 20 feet from his dad.  He is fishing with a bamboo pole and his casting is like perfect; very tight lines.  He has on the best clothing and is wearing Simms guide waders.  Again, he’s like 10 years old.  This old guy tells me that the kid has caught about 10 trout in under 45 minutes so I decide to watch him a bit.  Here is the good part – I’m not making this up – in less than 20 minutes he catches 6 trout and lands them all.  He was midge fishing! Why didn’t I think of that?

I introduced myself to his dad who happens to be a fish biologist and works for the state.  He says that his son has been fly fishing since age 2.  His stated goal is to be a professional fly fisherman when he grows up.  His dad said that he ties flies almost every night and has a fishing library of over 100 books and has read them all.  The father played it down but I could tell that he was busting with pride. Just watching this kid and hearing about his ambition made me feel that there is hope for the next generation.

The father’s name was Jim I think and he works for the DNR, didn’t get the kids name.

You mentioned something that I found very interesting…the fact that he was fishing with bamboo.

OK y’all, I’ll be the bad guy; I will be the one whom exhibits the jealousy we are all likely feeling. I have been in similar situations while watching young’uns fish. And I will be honest, I tend to get a little miffed when a kid is out-catching me! After all, I have all the books, the gear, and the desire, if not lust.

But after I get over myself, it is awesome to see a kid light up like that. I just always feared that it set a dangerous precedent for the rest of their life: If a kid catches a 23 inch + trout pre-pubescent, what do they have to look forward to, so far as Trout?

Great story Neal; even better reminder of perspective/priority, whichever one prefers.

I would say the kid that catches a 23+ inch trout has a lot to look forward to. I have caught a 29 inch trout and still look forward to catching a 23 inch trout, or even a day filled with small ones.

I saw him again today while fishing, his name is “K”.  Turns out I’m a bad judge of age; he is actually 15 years old :-[, sorry man.  He was fishing with the bamboo pole, a nice 7 1/2 ft stick (I didn’t see the make/model).  I talked to him for a while and he said that he has a strong interest in being either a “fishing guide” or an engineer; oh to be a teenager again with all the decisions ahead.  I must say that he certainly has a great knowledge of the sport and it is great to see young people who have read so many books (he said he has about “50” fishing books).

(K, if you are reading this thread then feel free to join the site and post).

Some (but not all) kids/teens find activities that are real passions for them.
