And if your path takes you from Amarillo to Raton, you better get off the gas before you role through. Last time I went to Red River I got pinched by the local county mounty driving Gifford’s truck. the worst part is he ahd bought one of those fool-proof fuzz-busters. The hi-po officer looked at it and laughed.
Surly you could lower your beer standards for a time and save the difference to buy two units.

What kind of man is the one whom does not stand by his principles? Lower my beer standards…On a happier note, I think I will end up with the Nuvi 780 for now, and later I may get a trail version. I think y’all are correct about the hassle of carrying a large unit around in the bush. Plus, I think if I get an all-in-one I will be sacrificing too many features.
One more question though: Do the trail units come loaded with the software Drifter was referring to, or would I have to buy software every time I wanted to go somewhere different?

DustyIsn’t the desiccate we use for dry flies the same as those little packets of silica that come in shoe boxes or with clothing? If so, it could be used in a pinch, right?

Thanks for all of the input guys. It has been very helpful. It is starting to look like two units would be the best option. But, I did find this dual-purpose unit from Garmin: https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?cID=134&fKeys=FILTER_SERIES_NUVI500&ra=true Plus, buying only one unit would save quite a bit of coin.
One of the cons though is it does not have Bluetooth capabilities. But the reviews I have read of the Bluetooth capable units say that that feature does not typically work well anyway. So now I am wondering about the practicality of carrying this bigger unit in the field. Any other thoughts?

Next question! Does anybody know of any good bars or night life going on in eagles nest. A young bachelor as myself has to occupy his evenings with some for of entertainment!
In Eagle’s Nest? Not much to my recollection. I would say go to Red River, visit Bull of the Woods, or Texas Red’s. But keep in mind that you still have to get back to the lodge after a night at the bar. And on this road there are rivers and cliffs you and your drunken frat brothers could fall into or off of. And knowing you and them as I do, and you stellar driving records, I would just save the money and load up on beer and head back to the lodge. Those N. New Mexico law officials love TX frat boy money. TX license plates are like a frekin’ beacon for those guys.

Juan just filled in my blanks: Dos Amigos in Eagle’s Nest. He was always very nice and flowing with info. when I went to that part of the country. Looks like you got your info. I think you should send Juan a case of beer. And no, Naty Light will not do.Dusty
Looks like having two units would be the best: say a Nuvi for the road, then an Oregon for the trail. Am I understanding your suggestions correctly? Do you know of a unit that does both?

In town, and on the corner of the road leaving Eagle’s Nest and heading to Red River, there is a flyshop, cannot remember the name. Will try to look it up when I get home. But the guy in there is knowledgeable and helpful. I bought my first rods from him. He can help with some guide services. But if I were you, I would keep driving West and try to hook up with a guide named Doc Thompson. Again, I will try to get his contact info for you when I get home.D.

I am in your same boat, and think I am going to go with the magnetic version if for any other reason ease of installation and removal. When I am done for the day I can put them back in the tubes. This one from Orvis is suppose to keep steady at 60m.p.h.
You could always get a bazooka tube from BP or Cabelas and latch it to your rig with some zip-ties or ratchet straps.
Let me know what you decide.

Thanks Mike. I know I will fish the Blus often that week. May even get a guide from Cutthroat Anglers. But after reading some stuff on the Pan I do not mind driving over. Does the Blue produce the size and numbers of the Pan?

Thanks Greg. I have wanted to go there for years, and now I will get my chance, but during winter. I did find some info. yesterday on The Pan, and I may try to drive the two hours or so for a day trip if my brother is willing. The dilemma, though, is the decision to fish or shoot. I will only have one day to do either. I want to catch the fish there, but I also want to bring back a few dozen gigs of images. May have to go back in the summer!
I hear ya about the wife; mine has been trying to get me to some resort since we married six yrs. ago.

Great report! I have been wanting to get to RMNP for many years now, and I may have the wife convinced that this is where we need to go next summer. That area certainly looks beautiful.Do you know if the part of the Big Thompson you fished is frozen in December? I ask b/c I will be spending Christmas in Silverthorne, and I guess I could make the drive if the fishing was worth it. Any guides you recommend to use or avoid?
