The problem with flash in low light is it’s hotter on the forground and doesn’t do much for the dark areas in the background and you end up with a mixed exposure that kills any natural feel.

I bet that would be a killer camera for macro work – with the 100mm 2.8 macro lens it would be awesome for shooting insects in the field.

My cameras shoot a CF and an SD card together and I always use the SD as the back-up because they never let me down.

I find that the more complex I make a simple photo, the more I can gouge the client for shooting it.. ;D
Seriously, what you’ve shot there is more than good enough and sometimes the simple solution works best, but IMHO flash gives stuff a bit more edge, better color and offers a lot more control on product shots.

The real threat to Canon (and therefore Nikon as well) will IMHO come from Sony in the second half of this year.
They’re really pushing into DSLR’s in a big way.They have a huge retail base and I think if they get the product and the price right you will be seeing a lot of them around.

Are they turning off the VR or IS when using the monopods?
There’s a setting on the Canon lenses (I bet Nikon as well) for IS with mono pods – I think it only works n the horizontal plane.
Works pretty well in low light.

True Bill, every lens/camera is different, though most 35mm lenses are getting soft by f16 – how much you might notice would depend on the use.
With fast prime lenses I almost never shoot beyond f8, but the macro’s work ok even at f16.
On my old Polaroid 600 SE cameras the longer lenses stop down to f128

Can’t help you with auto mode because I never use it, but I will say that figuring it out yourself isn’t that hard.
If you focus 1/3 into the depth you need and stop the lens down you should be able to see if the back’s sharp at the opening you’ve set.
Don’t stop the lens down all the way, most 35mm lenses are loosing sharpness at a great rate below 11.
With a wide lens f11 should do a landscape with no problem if you’ve set focus in the right place.
I’m sorry if this only causes more questions, depth of field is the hardest thing in photography IMHO and takes some effort to learn, though once you know it’s easy.

Zach, the bad news for your D200 is it may take a while for the problems to show up from a dunking..
Though new cameras are a lot better than old ones for bomb proofness, they’re still not waterproof.

I think fishing is about water so tend to show more water than sky – an exception might be if the clouds are really cool.
The old rule of thirds works well with big wide horizon shots, 1 third water to two thirds sky or vise versa.The first shot should show more water because the water is more interesting that the clouds (IMHO), some of the others are the same.

I can’t really help with this because the law in the US might be different from here in OZ, but I will say that I don’t point my cameras at the kind of person that I think would have a problem with the use later.
I’ve never had a release signed for fishing stuff and never had a problem.
We do use them for work shoots where shots are being used for product stuff and the person is not being paid as a matter of course.All my fishing buddies know the shots will/might/fingers crossed get into a magazine and maybe an ad.
There are some situations where a phone call is needed to be clear with the subject about the use and are they cool with it.
For example, I ask always ask Morsie (who’s with Sage ect.) before using a shot of him on stuff that’s not straight editorial – like a catalogue for a shop ect.www.dsaphoto.com
