David AndersonMemberIndeed its a DRY cold. ย We rub the cats on the wool rugs to generate electricity.
;D ;D ;D
It’s around +22 here this morning, but should warm up to around 30. (c)..
I think the coldest temp I’ve seen since I moved to Oz was -5 (c) on the ski fields last winter when I took the kids there to see snow.

David AndersonMemberYep, what they all said.
I’ve tested my 200 F2 with both the 1.4 and the 2x (canon) and the image quality suffered too much with the 2x, while with the 1.4 it was very near to just the lens.
That said, with some of the sharpening and other digital trickery available now, you could get images out of a 2x that would be useable.

David AndersonMemberHi Grant,
That first shot is half a stop over exposed and that’s enough to suck the life out of the color & contrast.
IMO The key to getting good digital shots is to get things like exposure and white balance right at the time of shooting.A couple questions –
Are you shooting raw ?
Are you shooting in auto white balance ?

David AndersonMemberI would really like to see longer gravel guards for wet wading.
I’m thinking the Simms neoprene in knee length .
These would be better than nothing snake protection and save more wear & tear on chins. The other thing would be fly fishing shirts that owe nothing to tradition and are designed purely around not getting nuked by the sun.
Tropic weight like LL Bean or Simms or Columbia, but with a high collar, maybe like a turtle neck that could be rolled up or down, and very long sleeves that cover more of your wrists & top of the hand.
I see things that are close, but not in very light cotton or the like for the heat.www.dsaphoto.com

David AndersonMemberWow, they really have and olde worlde feele don’t they ?
It’s hard to point faults out on shots like that because they’re so much about feel, but I think the water around the anglers legs needs to be lightened up a bit on the print.
The U shape of the dark vignette bothers me a bit. That said, the feel in general is beautiful.
On a side note, I have a Tenkara rod to try as well – very interesting.. ๐

David AndersonMemberHand holding & shooting you own fish is hard, though it can be done with a wider lens.
Background is important. The best bet IMHO is to shoot the fish in the water or the bank, but you have to be quick to save stress on the fish.

David AndersonMemberThe problem for me with Lightroom is I don’t want a catalog.
I generate a lot of shoots at work and want them in, edited, backed-up and out in a couple days to make room for the next job.If Lightroom had a simple file browser like Bridge it would be perfect, but it insists you do thing their way not yours.
Very strange.
(yes, I am the ALPHA dinosaur.. ;D)

Bridge/Photoshop still seems far easier to me and is just the one stop shop.

David AndersonMemberThe new LL BEan jacket arrived today.
Haven’t had it out in the cold rain yet, but I’m certainly happy with the design.
The cuffs are brilliant – there’s about 4 inches of neoprene (thin) under the sleeve and there’s also a removable spray skirt of the same material.
It’s longer than I wanted in body length, but I can live with that.
The quality is great and it seems very well made, though time will tell of course.
The pocket layout inside & out is well done and it should work well on the water.A couple things I don’t like –
The neck, when fully closed is very large and might allow water to come in the front – I don’t know for sure, but will keep an eye on it when/if it ever rains again.
There’s a side zipper for the main front pockets as well as the velcro flap, and that seems a little pointless.
At $325 it seems good value, though again, time will tell..

The rod holder is cool.
I hope the shop here gets one soon..

David AndersonMemberEric,
I don’t have any suggestions for you on a specific pack but this site has some great deals. I have bought to packs from them, but you have to keep watching for what you want.

David AndersonMemberNice Neal, what a beautiful river !
I agree, the fill flash is well done and looks like normal daylight.
The shirt the angler (Bob?) is wearing is also a good choice for photos because it really stands out without looking like something normally seen in a club or on a golf course.Morsie drummed the shirt thing into me years ago, and it makes a huge difference to the shot IMHO.
Well done.

I miss the lens, but not the F4’s I shot it with.. ๐

It’s one of those things you never stop learning.Luminous Landscape is a great website for tutorials and also has a good forum.

David AndersonMemberNo problem Dusty, you could even send beer if they knew how to make it there.. ๐
The best Canon lenses are the primes and not just the L’s.
Both the 50 and 100 macro’s are great and the cheaper 50, 85 & 100’s are also very sharp.
In the L’s, the new 24 1.4 is a cracker and the fast 35, 50, 85 and 135 are all awesome a well. With sharpening, I think it’s a case by case situation and out-put size is also important.
I like fish & fly shots sharper than I like portraits for example and I would rather back sharpness off in post on a very sharp lens, then try to sharpen up a shot done on a soft one.www.dsaphoto.com

David AndersonMemberToday was the first time I’ve seen one and I was very impressed in general.
The menu layout is brilliant and the view finder, for a crop frame, is awesome.
Also, the horizon grid is a great idea for quick wide shots.I hope all this stuff is on the 1DsIV !
Dusty, I read everything I can get on new cameras and am always interested in opinions and more than willing to take problems on board, but I also tend to concentrate more on the reviewers like Luminous-landscape and DPReview because they know what their on about and seem to have good testing methods.
Thanks for posting the link.. ๐The Tests I did with Morsie showed his 70-200 F4L and 100 Macro produced excellent raws at 800 & 1600 ISO while we were calibrating the lenses.
I know there was an early firmwear upgrade with the 7D for ghosting from frame to frame and it wouldn’t surprise me to see a chance in color as well, but I SERIOUSLY doubt Canon would release them if they weren’t sharp because of the sensor.
Anyway, I will be asking about them at Canon , because I want one now myself ! ย ๐
