As above, but I would add that the lens is everything when it comes to sharp.
For best results on a newer digital camera you need the best prime (one focal length) lenses and a tri-pod.
You also may need to use mirror lock-up and either a shutter cable or the self timer.The sharpest Canon lenses are the 24 1.4L, 50 1.2 L, 85 1.2L, 100 2.8 L macro, 135 F2L and 200 F2L
The new tilt shifts are also awesome.

I’ve had 3 versions of the 70-200 2.8 and they’re not a bad lens, just not very sharp on the high rez cameras compared to the f4 version or any of the prime L lenses in the same range.
They’re good for action because of focusing speed, but not sharp enough for anything serious.
The new version, if it has the new coatings should be a big improvement and I look forward to trying one.

Yeah, I am definitely going to go with 8GB of ram. I wish I could do 16, but I don’t think the boss will pay for that one.
Correct me if I’m wrong, but I was under the impression that there’s a limit to how much ram some applications can use ?

It’s REALLY easy to shoot tethered with the DPP softwear.
Plug the camera in, select ‘control camera’ in the DPP menu and away you go.
If you shoot to a folder on the desktop you can also then open that folder in Bridge (and I assume Lightroom) to then edit/view with familiar softwear.
The DPP runs in the background.You can shoot with or without cards in the camera – I use them as a back-up.
It is the best way to shoot product stuff, but I find it a bit slow for shooting people in the studio.

I have a lot of LL Bean gear because most of it is made in tall sizes and I’m pretty happy with all of it.
Because it doesn’t get all that cold here, I use one of their shell jackets and wear it over various fleece gear depending on temps.
It’s a really good jacket IMHO and I love it.

I haven’t seen the new Hoya’s, but I hope they’re better made then the old slim line pro’s.
All of mine scratched easy and fell apart – all of them.I now have B&W’s and they’re a lot more robust, though more expensive.

The real reason a lot of people have the wide TSE’s is the very large image circle they throw makes for high quality in the corners of the image.
The movements are a bonus IMHO.At the time I got the 24 TSE it was better then the 16-35 and 24-70 L zooms @ 24mm.
Now I have the 24 1.4L II and it’s become my main wide lens for work stuff.
If I wasn’t a people photographer, I would have got the new 24 TSE for the movements.I also just got the 17 TSE and it’s flat out awesome for such a wide lens, again thanks to the huge image circle.
Agree the bendy stuff gets a little same same, but most fishing stuff is looking a bit that way to me these days – is that old age or boredom ?

I’m not familiar with the Sigma, but a full frame fisheye has massive distortion which is part of their look and on some stuff I’ve seen it’s really cool.
The same lens cropped though, might just look like a crappy super wide with bent corners.Just guessing a bit, because I don’t have a fisheye.
I do think it’s something you should try before buying.. 😉

What a let down….it’s not even white! I guess it lacks the “L” factor. Hey look on the bright side, the lens color is just a shade or two off from being correct 😉 Ziiiiiiiing!

Hi Callum,
I like to light rods from directly overhead with a large light source or shoot them in full shade if I don’t have lights with me.
Background is also important.
This is a shot of the TCX5 for a Flylife review, it’s shot in shade over a constant background with little detail so the rod (and reel) really stand out.
The next two are about the rod and the environment they’re used in.
This is from a story on the cape where I did a side bar on the then new Zed 9 weight.
And this is a couple double handers on the Tongariro.
Obviously the more background, the less the shot is about the rod.

Yep, over cooked IMHO.
Sharpening is best done between raw and final size format, though taking something down to web rez off a large file shouldn’t give you too much trouble.
In Bridge (CS3) I would normally give a shot like that a little bump in the blacks and sharpness, but only a bump.
Sharpness of around 50 is heaps if the shot is already sharp, and blacks +7 (normal is +5) would be my max.The artifact in the bottom corner could be from conversion to JPEG as well.
Is the shot from a raw ?
