David AndersonMemberNot sure about the color thing, it might be early days for the firmwear or a problem in processing rather than the sensor itself.
They mention auto white balance and IMHO that never gets it right – not even close.

David AndersonMemberMorsie,
I was excited too about the 7D, and then I read this:
http://darwinwiggett.wordpress.com/2009/11/11/the-canon-7d/Have you shot enough w/ the 7D to comment on the review?
D.
Sorry to step in early, but I’ve seen results like that from the first tests of the DsIII.
In the test shots on that review it looks like the sensor has gone beyond what the lens will resolve.
The 45TSE from my own short test was not as sharp as the TSE90 and never made it into my lens line-up when tested on my cameras. The 7D is very high resolution for the size of it’s sensor, more than anything else around at the moment and is going to push lenses to their absolute limit while a 12MP camera wont.
It’s also going to exaggerate any problems like camera shake and poor focusing in a big way.www.dsaphoto.com

David AndersonMemberI sent William Joseph an email the other day asking when we could expect to see their new waterproof backpack and the answer was early in the new year..
The one shot I’ve seen of them looks good (thanks Zach) so I look forward to seeing them.

David AndersonMemberI agree with what Henry has said, but would add that a longer lens (though not fashionable for fish shots) can get you a good shot in that sort of light because it isolates the subject from the hard to balance background.
I’m thinking around 135 – 200 mm (FF)

David AndersonMemberThe first is also my favorite because it has some mood.
I don’t think the post processing does it a lot of favors, though that might just be old age. ๐The next is ok, but looks too squinty and the lights a bit hard, the framing is good.
There’s not much you can do in hard daylight except fill flash or turn the subject away from the light. The last one is very nice and again, well framed, but the post (a bit like the others) seems a bit muddy ?
The side light is excellent and I love it in the foliage on the opposite bank.Overall well done.
PS – love the small streams.

David AndersonMemberIt’s a tough question..
Morsies right, there’s just not much around at the moment, though there does seem to be some interesting new stuff around the corner.
In Zach’s story on the tackle show there was a new William Joseph that looked interesting as well as an LL BEan sling pack that I’m waiting to try.
Sage also have their new waterproof line and I’m waiting on the boat bag to use as a errr boat bag for my gear.
My pack at the moment is a Lowepro ranger that I’ve put a cheapish waterproof stuff sack into the bottom of (around the padded dived section) that can be rolled up & closed in the rain.
I also have a couple smaller stuff sacks in the top section I can put additional gear into if it gets wet.
It’s not ideal because it’s not a quick thing to work out of in the wet, but my camera is pretty much water proof (not sure about quicksand !www.dsaphoto.com

David AndersonMemberThanks for your input guys.
Most of the limited saltwater stuff I do is off of boats and a fast long distance cast in the wind is the most common casting problem.
The TCR9 has been good for that, but can bite back a bit at the end of the day when my errr, aspirational casting starts to fade a bit.
I also need to consider freshwater cod fishing where we throw big flies short distances into fallen timber ect.My evil plan at the moment is to replace a cluster of different saltwater/ heavy rods with a matched pair of 9’s (a great all-round weight here in Oz) and work more on my casting and fish fighting skills.

David AndersonMemberIs it any different than the Abel Anondized reels?
That Hardy is no different. All are purely “status” symbols. The only difference is the scale. For those who have the coin with no more important priority to spend it on, the Hardy is to many, what the Abels are to many. Out of reach, pure Jonesing, status symbols. .
I’m with Zach on this.
Yes, they are expensive, but they’re very well made and IMHO worth the money.
I remember well the first few that came into the fly shop I used to work at, they cost 4 or 5 times what a Hardy or SA reel did, but soon became very popular with the people who appreciated to build quality.
Well made reels are now more common and expensive stuff is everywhere in fly fishing, but I still think the Abel stuff stands out.
In saying that, you couldn’t give me a barf finnish one.

David AndersonMemberThe advantage of the color card IMHO is not anything to do with the computer and ink levels, but as a quick guide for your eye.
I think it’s possible to train your eye to see a lot of this stuff before it becomes an issue.
I also think it’s the photographers job to get a good clean frame and the printers / graphics peoples job to get it looking good on paper or screen.
We’re robbing ourselves of valuable cafe time by doing their jobs as well.. ;D

David AndersonMemberWhat are the odds?
Just the other day a fellow called me about booking a fishing trip. Said he was in sales and marketing for Sony. I asked what division,,, ย and he said the Camera division. I almost dropped the phone. Yall wish me luck this could be epic.My suggestion,
Bust your nut to get the guy a fish of a lifetime, and then pull out the oldest, most useless, most stupid little crap camera (or phone) you can find, and get s shot of him & fish.
Then tell him how you wish you had a decent, hi-rez, though not to expensive quality camera.
