    From DPReview:

“Thanks to its rather efficient combination of a very high pixel count with excellent per-pixel sharpness at base ISO the 7D delivers impressive image detail and resolution. However, you have to keep in mind that the camera demands the very best lenses to really show what it can do. Having looked at the image results from Canon’s 15-85mm and 18-135mm kit lens options it becomes obvious that the lenses are the limiting factors here, not the camera. In terms of default tone curve and color response the 7D is very similar to other current Canon DSLRs, which makes things easier if you have two or more different Canons in your bag.”

David–Is this to say that this body will only perform optimally when paired with L glass? If so, and assuming I ever get the body, I will be sending a care package down under for some calibration!! ;D

No problem Dusty, you could even send beer if they knew how to make it there.. 😀

The best Canon lenses are the primes and not just the L’s.
Both the 50 and 100 macro’s are great and the cheaper 50, 85 & 100’s are also very sharp.
In the L’s, the new 24 1.4 is a cracker and the fast 35, 50, 85 and 135 are all awesome a well.

With sharpening, I think it’s a case by case situation and out-put size is also important.
I like fish & fly shots sharper than I like portraits for example and I would rather back sharpness off in post on a very sharp lens, then try to sharpen up a shot done on a soft one.

A picture is thousand words that takes less than a second while a thousand words is a picture that takes a month.

Just a couple of pics shot with the 7D  on a 4 day road trip that was meant to be 10 days – 110 degrees every day – and night, fires busting out all over the place so I decided to come home early. Daytime light was terrible, I’m pretty happy with the results. The focus seems to be inconsistent but I that down to me not being used to the new system. When its on its really on.

These gliders were coming in at well over 100mph so the 8fps was useful, shot at 1250 ISO and f8@5,000/sec. This was the first real shooting did with the camera using a 70-200f4 and a 1.4 extender – the camera had not been calibrated with the extender attached. results were scratchy but I would put that down to having to track them. They were skimming the surface of the lake I was camped on by only a few feet and were still a good half mile from the landing strip. There was so much heat the lift on these things must have been incredible, I reckon they would have been struggling to get them down.

As always, when you skip several generations of technology this camera is going to take a little time to get used to.

Another shot of one of those gliders skimming the lake’s surface. I wonder if they ever collide with the birds that inhabit the place. This guy is really moving, probably over 100 mph. This lake has GREAT flats fishing for carp, I’d caught a couple when the gliders started coming in and soon put the rod down.

And these guys were having a dogfight.

Files look good Morsie, but theres 2 things I wanted to point out.

The 7D line AF/AI servo isn’t perfect but its darn good. I wouldn’t though draw a conclusion from these early test and there’s two things going on that will have compromised it a bit.

First and foremost is the addition of the TC. No matter what lens/body you have adding a TC only taxes your bodies ability to AF. With a zoom as opposed to a prime, thats made worse. Its going to hunt a bit, its going to miss a fair completely. Thats true with my 500 f4 and 1D, its going to more of a factor with a zoom/pro sumer

Second. The heat. The atmosheric haze is also going to play havoc, the longer your focal length, the worse that becomes.

I would reserve judgement until your putting the AF/AI Servo to the test under conditions that arent going to stack the deck against it.
