I have a basic/rudimentary knowledge of photography. I have a nice P&S and a nice entry level DSLR. I have played with the settings some, but I am still mostly relegated to the basic auto functions on the cameras. I do get lucky every now and again and get a nice shot. I want to learn more about photography so that I know what I am doing and am able to obtain some nice shots on purpose instead of by chance.

So my question to all of you here is how did you get started in photography and  how did you learn the basics? Did you take classes? Read books? Simple trial & error? I would appreciate any suggestions either general or specific on the direction I should take.

For you guys in Texas (especially the DFW area) are there any classes or instructors out there that you would recommend?

My photographic education was more formal, my first classes were in junior high and high school and continued on through college.
    Which is worked for me.
I have also learned a lot by trial and error.
I think what really matters is figuring out what works best for you as far as learning goes.
Aside from the technical, there’s the aesthetic which can be the hardest to learn because you are really putting yourself out there with a project, so you have to have or develop a thick skin for constructive criticism.

If there are local photography groups in the DFW area you might consider looking there.  They have monthly competitions and critiques as well as lectures.
    Hope this helps.
    Good luck!

I don’t have any training as such, but have picked it up along the way.
It’s one of those things you never stop learning.

Luminous Landscape is a great website for tutorials and also has a good forum.
    Well worth wading through.

A picture is thousand words that takes less than a second while a thousand words is a picture that takes a month.

There are 2 areas that are vital to good photography: Composition and Exposure.
