    Hey Joel,

I’ve not been to the SI yet, but some good resources for research are:
    http://www.fishandgame.org.nz/ or http://www.nzfishing.com/

    PS. Bring a rainjacket  😉  ;D

Oh and I’m sure Simon has already mentioned to leave the felt soled boots at home and bring the aqua stealth boots.

    Hi Neal,

I love the flies you’ve been posting lately!
These boobies look quick and easy to tie! I have a question though.
How durable are the orange eyes? I mean how long do they last on the fly?

    1.  See recipe above for the saltwater hook equivalents.  I tied this on a freshwater hook because it’s all I had handy.  I would never fish this hook in saltwater.

Sorry, I did read the recipe, but when I had gotten to the botton of your post, I’d not matched the saltwater hook with the one in the pic. My bad.

By the way – what are you using to cut the foam? A Stanley knife?

    What an awesome fly Neal!

The hook you’ve used – has it been treated for the salt? Wont it rust?

I dont really tie for the salty fly fishing but one thing I would do differently is glue the thin skin on the foam before cutting out the shapes. Another thing that could work nicely if you do this is to use a paper punch to make the holes, assuming the foam will fit into the punch.
For those that cannot get the medical tubing, could possibly substitute with tubing used on the pumps/filters in fish tanks.
This would probably save on some material and time, enabling you to tie 1 or 2 extra. Again, an excellent tie – like it lots!

    Just a thought though! 🙂

Yes, it is true! There has been much contraversy surrounding this issue!
To my knowledge, the streams in the Western Cape are the ones that have been targeted for eradication. Here are some links to some more information:

Dullstroom is a town known for its privatised fly fishing venues. There is trout fishing all over!

Cant go wrong with the Olympus 1050SW or the Pentax Optio W60.

My mate Mike, uses the Olympus and its a great little camera.
The Pentax has a really good reputation!

I use a Sony W80 with a waterproof housing – nice clear, sharp pics!

Your comments are very interesting as many of the guys are always looking for a better stick for the application and as you said, weight is one of the issues that are raised. The other one is the responsiveness of the blank, as it is all about feel. Daryl will no doubt be able to add to this…

    Well…….
Although the CZ nymphing technique is very popular amongst fisherman in SA, most of them are not truely CZ nymphing. The altered technique works well in the conditions, but there are many streams and rivers that require different approaches, like the stream “X” for example. I dont think that CZ nymphing works too well there. Incidently, I reckon that a rod such as the 10′ 4wt Helios which Neal has described would be ideal, especially the added ability for reach and mending, but then, in which fly fishing situation would that not be perfect?

I have a 9’0 2wt Dorber, that is fantastic on the smaller streams, as is the 2wt Scott 8’8 that Mike has (is it the G2 or F?). The developement of longer rods has been a welcome improvemet to the already huge selection of rods.

But I have to say that I am constantly impressed by tackle manufacturers! They have made it almost too easy to be able to fish successfully nowdays! 🙂
