It may be a little too in-depth for what you are trying to achieve, but a good read for some valuable info is the “Onstream Macro” thread.
Neal and some of the other guys went into quite some detail of how to accomplish the kind of shots you are after.

    Nice Mike, good SBS 😉

This is the goto fly for many guides and fly fisherman on the SA streams.

Great thanks Clark, I’ll give you a ring perhaps this evening – got stuck at work yesterday, sorry.

In terms of becoming a guide, I’m looking to gain knowledge/accreditation that I could use world wide, no matter the “jeandra” of the fishing/guiding/experience.

I agree that there are alot of guides nowdays that dont have sufficient knowledge or qualification (as in first aid, etc). Too many have just taken their experience, which is generally just on their local waters and sell that under the auspices of “pro guide”.

Initially, the intention is merely for my own gain, especially now that world wide economics is in disarray. At some stage I will hopefully be able to make the transition from “IT pleb” to “guide”.

Daryl I have toyed with the idea of running such a school in NZ. I guided for 27 years here for most the highest profile establishments and my client lists includes Joan Wulff, Randall Kaufmann, Billy Connolly, Dennis Black, Al Caucci, and a few thousand others.

Most NZ guides learn through trial and error as there is no formal accrediation here. just print a card, market your butt off and go for it…

but I think the time has come for some formal training as the last few years has seen a marked downturn in the quality of guiding in NZ mainly due to the lack of regulation of the industry.

There’s a couple of folks on this board I’ve guided… perhaps they may give you an idea of the standard of service i used to pride myself on providing.

My contact details are on my websites if you want to give me a call to discuss it.

Clark, I’ll give you a ring later on.
What was it like guiding Billy Connolly – did you actually get any fishing done – he’s a funny guy.

I like what you’ve done with that desk. Good vision dude.
If I’d seen that in that desk – man I could kick myself.

    Pheasant feathers posted yesterday….

Ah cool! Thanks Clark. It will come in handy – yesterdays fish took a pheasant tail nymph, with an ICE dub thorax, and CDC legs, under a ZAK nymph, under a CDC Caddis.

I recommend you look at the TFO Finesse or TFO Professional.
Excellent value in those rods although the TFO Pro is not finished to nicely.

Thanks Benjamin, I’ll check it out, I might just find something 🙂

Mick, I have been doing a little experimenting, and now feel that I will be needing a lens more capable than the one I’m using now.

I think I need to have a chat to Santa

    To be honest, I’ve been suspecting my fly line as a culprit. I’ve been using a #4 Rio Nymph tip with a 10′ – 12′ leader/tippet, with Klinkhammer/Elk Hair Caddis/White Royal Wolf/Stimulator and a GRHE/H&C/PTN/Copper John/ZAK as a dropper.

My TFO is a little strong for my other lines, so maybe I need to fish a lighter rod, but they just dont have the backbone in the wind out there. Its a little concerntrated out on the Wainui.

Andrew and Marc have given me some other suggestions, which I am pretty keen to try out. Had my lad out with me today, so I was coaching more than experimenting.

The fish on the Wainui are not as free rising as I expected them to be!

Mike, the onstream macro thread is worth another read boet.
Especially the last section where Neal has gone into quite some detail re photographing flies, and the distance of the subject.

A few questions- would you be prepared to ship it international?
Has it got the original tube? Is it a 3 piece?

    Daryl
