Mike McKeownMemberLet me start by saying, I was developing the photos in the Olympus Studio RAW development tool, that could be where some of the issues originated, as it only allows for similar changes the camera would make, sharpening is done via a scale of 2 negative and 2 positive, with single increments between them, the same with contrast and the likes.
We have PS2 on my wife’s laptop, bought and paid for by her company, but it was unavailable till last night.
Oh my Sake, what a difference that makes, PS RAW development is what they needed all along; I finally understand what you guys have been on about.
Watch this space…

John BennettMemberMike I know it’s not cheap and while propiety raw converters are great as they are free and often handle their colors better ( more accurately) you really can’t beat the power of PS.
I’m not talking about the power to radically change your photo as in composites, or painting, etc….All the basic photo editing tools are so much more flexible and sublte…thus more powerful.
Whther you use CS2,CS3,CS4 or even Elements which is 80% functionality I really recomend you give it a go. Theres a learning curve..its like stepping from the cockpit of ultralight to a 747 but it comes with time.

David AndersonMemberGood point, the cameras I’ve tried with more subtle AA filters cause moire problems on fabric and can be too sharp to get good skin.
(IMHO)
All the medium forma stuff I’ve tried was horrid for head & shoulder shots. They are better for landscape stuff maybe, but I would rather not have to get rid of moire then do a bit of sharpening.

MemberBe sure you sharpen at your output size as the last step. You might try sharpening using the High Pass filter and Smart Sharpen in CS3 or later.
Google each technique and you will get a lot of info. Bruce Fraser wrote a entire book on sharpening but like most PS Tech books its a real sleeping pill!Dec 14, 2008 at 6:42 pm #66001
Mike McKeownMemberThere must be something wrong with my cameras auto focus when I shoot RAW…
It did it again today, I was shooting some flies in a Step by Step and true as daylight, they are all out of focus. I thought they were all good, I then snapped a few extras at the end in Supper High quality JPEG, without doing anything to the camera, and they were sharp. Different lense……………………
But it can’t be???? focus is in the lens right???? so what is freaking wrong??????
Dec 15, 2008 at 12:56 pm #66002
John BennettMemberMike can you take 2 shots 1 raw and then 1 jpeg using a tripod and cable release of something with some texture and post downsized samples here. Dont take them from minimum focus distance
I wont go so far as to say, its impossible..but ive never heard of anyone having a problem where raw files are out of focus.
Dec 15, 2008 at 1:47 pm #66003
Mike McKeownMemberI will give that a bash tonight… I will try shoot something that has got depth and see what happens in different modes.
But I went and did it again last night…
Auto Focus – thought the view finder, looks crisp and clear, take the shot, and the focus is moved back, this is from a stable base with no movement.
Manual, focus the subject and bring the focal point slightly in front of if, and the photo is sharp.Weirdest thing…

Memberthrough reading these posts i have come to realize i am not using my camera to its full potential and was unaware of the raw feature.
i was at a concert last night and was side stage. decided to shoot in raw. since there was no flashes allowed we’ll see how things come out. i was using my head as a tripod (camera on top of cranium for some shots)
played with other features too. i’ll let y’all know how they come out when i upload them.
ed should update the setlist today: http://oarsa.org/features/viewfutureshow.php?showID=1436

Darryl LampertMemberOnce again I am learning… thank you for your input.
David, this was on an Olympus e500, with a 55-200 Sigma lens with a UV filter.
After studying a few of them, I have some composition issues I need to iron out, and that impacted on the focus, but the others, it seems like I got depth of field but with the drawback of a soft image.
I understand that each one needs to be developed individually, and have been doing them one by one.
I think I have a decent workflow…
Here are 3 things I have learnt in post production.
1. Most of the images need to be 2 full points sharper.
2. Most images need Natural as the picture mode.
3. Contrast is what seems to make the picture jump.Nothing can make up for poor composition and I need to figure out why I was not focusing correctly…
Mike,
A couple of other points to consider is that the Sigma lens is not the sharpest or greatest glass to begin with.

Mike McKeownMemberThanks Darryl, I am keen on getting a prime lens.
I use Kenko on my 55-200, and Hoya on my kit 14-45.
Thank you for comments and feedback… you know I appreciate them.Further Update…
I played around with a few things after chatting to Darryl.

Mike McKeownMemberFirstly, point of order, he is South African… just trying to become a Kiwi.
Boet is an Afrikaans word meaning “brother”, used as a term of endearment, kind of slang for mate, friend, bud, brother… you get the idea.
Thanks for the comment, much appreciated.

In the review above, Ken Rockwell indicates that the new generation of camera electronics eliminates the need to shoot and process RAW for most applications.

Mike McKeownMemberLike, boot that you wear on your feet, but shorten the middle syllable… I think if you really want to know, Turner Wilkinson said the correct pronunciation at the end of his podcast… just down load it and go to the end…

For those that have upgraded to one of the newer camera models, have you moved away from shooting RAW?
Hmmmm, Ken Rockwell said –
