I have the Ross Pliers, which I originally bought for salt water fishing, but I have wound up using them pretty much any time I am in my boat and I love them. Expensive pliers are not by any means a necessary purchase, but mine have proven to be one of the most useful pieces of gear I own. I am sure there are many people who would disagree with me, but I honestly believe they are worth the money.

You raise a very valid point. I can certainly agree with the fact that holding a fish vertical is not the desired method, but it had never occurred to me that doing so for a few seconds to take weight measurement might be harmful to the fish. I would be curious to hear if any of the folks who use these tools on a regular basis have seen any negative results.I tested it out by weighing a few objects first on another scale that I know to be accurate. It seems to be spot on.
I actually started looking for a knock off Boga after seeing the one that Adam Mcdowell has (which is made by Cabela’s). Apparently Cabela’s is no longer making their version, but there seems to be no shortage of similar products at a very low cost.
There is no question that a real Boga is a higher quality product but when the difference in cost is considered, this is kind of a no-brainer. I really did not want to pay upwards of $120 to get an accurate weight on a fish but $14.95 is a little easier to stomach…

I tried it for a while, but fishing in PFD really sucks. As you can see from the pictures, they were not generating while we were there, so I gave up on it pretty quickly.
On another note, I did some more research and made a few modifications to the flies that I think will wind up working a little better. I will try to get around to posting a few pictures in the next day or so.
A quick comment on the fly….
It is heavy as all get out when wet, and really a pain to cast. I think I made my first attempts a little thick and wound up trimming the fly up on the water which made it a little better.
I know that this is a pretty commonly used method for these fish, so I would be curious to hear if any of you have had the same issues and how you corrected it. The fly certainly did it’s job when it came to holding the fish, but it seems like there has got to be some way to improve on it.

It was indeed a site fishing affair. While these fish were not surface feeding, they were still visible a few feet below the surface, and we were seeing quite a few of them. I can only imagine the fishing would be even better in the warmer months.Yep. Still using the bamboo push pole.
The “real” push poles are sweet, but having used both, I see no recognizable advantage that would necessitate spending $600+ for one.
I have used the same piece of bamboo for 2 seasons now and when it gives out, I will walk across the street from my house and cut down another one. Can’t beat that…
Yeah Tim. Good eye on the Billy Pate. I love that reel. It is heavy as all get out, but absolutely bulletproof.
I wish I had some experience with that….
Montauk is supposed to be pretty awesome. Have fun and post pics.
