Man, I learn something new every day. Somehow I have managed to fish for a long time without ever seeing the “castwell knot”. That looks too good to be true. Does it actually work? It seems WAY too easy. I will be trying that out for sure.

I cannot speak to the technical specs, but I have a pair of silver mirrors and a pair of amber 580g’s and I find them to be pretty similar in terms or light transmission. The silver mirrors do have a slightly pinkish tint, but I actually like the silvers better because they provide incredible contrast. The cost may not be worth it to some, but I really see them as necessary since the majority of my fishing is sight fishing. If most of your fishing is in shallow or fresh water, you cannot go wrong with them.All good stuff Zach and I tend to agree with you. One exception is that most bluewater anglers tend to prefer the blue mirrors rather than the green as you stated. Green mirrors are basically amber lenses (at least with Costas) which tend to be better for shallow flats and streams and such. The blue mirrors are gray which is slightly darker and more suited to the heavy glare associated with open water.
That has been my experience at least. I have been wrong before though…
And yes, these are all fly caught… There are a few folks on this forum who can testify to the complete insanity we encounter with these fish on the fly.

I LOVE Lamsons and I do a fair amount of tarpon fishing (at least one or 2 trips a year). But I have never taken a Lamson on a tarpon trip. As good as they are, I just don’t know that they are up to the job of handling a fish the size and strength of an adult tarpon. I would spend the money and get the right gear, or borrow.
They may be perfectly capable, but that is my two cents for what it’s worth.
Oh. Yeah, the Highsiders aren’t rated for a 25 hp.
I’d still bow mount the trolling motor though. 🙂

I rebuilt my boat for fly fishing, and the design is based around a clean casting deck up front with nothing to tangle line on, so a bow mounted tolling motor would kind of defeat the purpose.The transom is in great shape now that i have rebuilt it and added plates to both sides. Originally it was pretty weak though, which is why i have always been nervous about too much weight on it.

The setup that you described is pretty much what I have been thinking about doing. I am going to make sure it is bulletproof moving forward. And you are correct. Certain models are rated for certain motors. Mine is rated for up to a 10hp.Thanks for the ideas and comments.

I do have a transom plate. The clamps were tightened all the way on the transom and the motor was not locked in the running position. It just hit really hard.Both of those suggestions are along the lines of what I was thinking. My only reservation is that Gheenoe transoms are not super sturdy. It seems like it might be better if the safety line had some “give” to it to keep it from damaging the transom if the motor was ever knocked again.
