I am fishing a somewhat unique situation here. The Delaware River system (West Branch and Main Stem primarily) require casts to rising fish of 60-70 feet with #16-20 dry flies. Any closer than 50-60 feet and you will never see the fish again.
youre likely going to be good with the expert distance for 60-70′ casts. A heavier taper would not load as well at extreme distances unless you downlined to a WF4.

did you try a GPX taper or half size up taper on the scott? that might help but sometimes a heaver front head makes for hard presentations

My wife and I just returned from a week of fishing with pops at turneffe and we did not manage to get weather that nice or fish that big. Hard rain and wind 5 out of 6 days, but his eyes can find fish as long as you are willing to keep wading in the rain.

zach, the guy that did my wifes was in lovejoy and has retired. the story that i got was that he sold his patent and retired.

Peter, We have used Southeastern Pond Management out of Opelika, sounds like the same school of logic.
Its sounds like your pond is overcrowded like most. You have a limited source of food and bass that reproduce by the 100’s yearly which turns into very few that make it past the first year or two. If you had a shock study conducted on your pond it would probably show 100 1/2 pounders for every 3 pound or larger fish, or maybe worse! Pending the pond owners approval I would recommend that you keep everything that you catch under 14″. If you cull out 100 small fish this year you would see drastic size increase in the fish you catch next year and so on. I have heard 12 fish per acre per year to remove as a general guideline but the major factor is what they are eating.
Something to keep in mind also is water temperature plays the biggest role in when big fish eat. Moreso important than what you use. Try fishing sunrise and sunset when surface temps are cooler and you will probably have better probability of catching larger fish.
you probably also did not get a solid hookset on the fish which would be hard to do with a ultra light rod. Big bass have very hard mouths that require you to really “Hit” them to break the skin!

Zach, My father in law had a local guy make 2 largemouth mounts for my wife and brother in law for christmas. They both look great but for some reason the 11 pounder looks bigger than the 12 pounder. They both look exceptional though and paint work is nearly identical to photos. Steer clear of skin mounts, they do not age well!

Bob, have you used uni to uni knot connections for bite? I was rigging a wire leader for an upcoming trip with surflon to 30#mono with 5 turn uni’s the other night.
sorry for the confusion Bob, i have heard lake trout fishing can be good on Flathead. you should have a scenic trip, watch out for bears!
Tim, for what you are doing, I think that for what you do (hiking/fishing) you will love the 17-55 range and the IS is great. I picked one up for my 30D and it is so sharp and versatile that i rarely take it off of my camera now. it is an excellent “walk around” lens. the 24-70 is not wide enough to me on crop frames like eric mentioned
