Zach — We’ve had a number of dogs come through our place over the years and setters, for the most part, were very biddable dogs. You shouldn’t have too much trouble finding another well-mannered setter. I enjoyed shooting over the setters and many made great family dogs as well. My main quam with the setters is that long hair. I am an English Pointer man but must admit that setters are regal and very stylish on point.

The bottom line in field bred dogs of any breed is that they need exercise daily or they can become one of the most destructive creatures that God has ever created. (There are some execeptions to this but it is rare).  I take my dogs out every day to run, and sometimes I work them twice daily.  Not only does it relieve stress in the dog, they love it, and it keeps my athletes in peak physical condtion so they are ready when the season rolls around.

IMHO, no matter  the breed, what dictates an outstanding bird dog is the dog’s prey drive, which can be nurtured but not trained.

I’ve got a new english pointer pup out of the 2005 National Champion Phantom’s Wizard and  Phantom’s Funseekin Babe who is out of the National Champion Funseeker’s Rebel.  Despite having an incredible drive to find birds and run BIG, she is the most polite, quiet companion that you could ever ask for.  My daughter will be two in August and they are best buds; she  even holds the leash when we go for family walks!

I’ve never owned a Britney but have hunted over a few.
