Matt JonesMemberGuys,
I returned on Friday from the Palometa Club, what turned out to be one of the most memorable trips of my life. Some of you might remember that this lodge recorded it’s 500th permit earlier this year. Having only been open for 6 (6 month) seasons, I’d say that’s pretty unheard of. As for this season, they set a new record of 159 permit. Crazy!
Anyways, we had a small weather scare to start the week, but it only got better from there. My boss David Leake, told me that the guides here were the best he’d ever seen, and now that I’ve fished with them, I fully support his argument.
All in all, our group of 12 landed a total of 19 permit, including my 30lber (arguable). Some may argue this, but my fish was labeled “caught” because my guide had touched leader just prior to tailing the fish. After a 30 minute battle, this permit still had enough energy to push into another blistering run, ending up popping my leader. While absolutely disgusted, I still am happy for feeding the fish and having the opportunity to fight it. A few cuda, baby tarpon, snook, and sharks were caught as well.
I’ll spare the lengthy report as I’ve already written one on my blog http://theflyphoto.com/2011/06/most-epic-week-of-permit-fishing/ More photos as well…
As for the macro I planned on renting (thanks to the valuable information from the gents on this forum) I had to wait as shipping was $90!!! My 24-70L 2.8 served as my substitute.
Here are some photos from the trip:

Gotta give props to my Mavs!

Matt JonesMemberBrian, I have a Canon 30D. For the underwater photos I shoot with the 10-22mm and an Iklite housing with 8″ dome.
