MemberWow! Taxidermy fail.
I did a story on these guys east of Dallas for Lone Star Outdoor News awhile back, what I see that makes all the difference is the quality of the actual painting. Here’s part one of a two parter – http://texasflycaster.com/the-black-knight-taxidermist-pushes-the-medium-to-another-level/ . I find the entire process fascinating. I just checked the link to their site, and apparently they’ve lost that one.

MemberWhen I break the magical 30″ mark with a brown trout, I am going to go with a wood sculpture.

MemberChoose carefully. I chose to do a skin mount of a wild male rainbow trout a few years ago, and due to the seasonal kyped jaw, the taxidermist said he couldn’t find a head form to match my fish. (They usually don’t use the real heads anymore because due to the heavy oil content of salmonids, the heads tend to shrivel up and dry out.) He tried to build it out with putty, but it didn’t come close and was a huge disappointment. It made me regret killing the fish. If I had a camera with me on that trip, I probably would have been happy with a photo, especially if I had known how the mount was going to turn out.

MemberI don’t understand why the taxidermist couldn’t find a head form to match a kype-jawed rainbow.

Memberto use a tired phrase…”I know, right?!” This taxidermist had mounted some deer and bass for friends of mine, and did excellent work on those. He had mounted trout before, but I think he specializes in deer and bass. I guess it’s hard to find a good trout taxidermist here in the south, since they probably do alot more bass and pan fish species. Here’s a picture of the fish…

Here’s a picture of the mount…he didn’t come close on the gill plate color.

MemberYeah, like I said, it’s easy to underestimate the degree of artistry that goes into taxidermy.

MemberBy the way, whereever you go, DON’T go to http://www.stripedbassmounts.com.

Can you believe this? I can’t believe people would pay money for such a travesty and call it “taxidermy.” Even more, I can’t believe that THIS is the example they’d want to put on the Internet to advertise as a proud representation of the quality of their work.

That thing is horrible. Notice how nobody on there holding a fish is smiling. I would be smiling if I just wen to pick up my mount, unless it looked like those.

MemberI know this is not a mount but i find Martin’s work something special.

Simon Chu commissioned a Bonefish from Martin and all i can say is amazing.
Just another option to consider.
