    Eric, Ditto what Tim said.

If I were you, i would try casting a newer taper fly line and or up-lining before you scrap your T3. Personally, I like Rio’s tapers a little better than SA but they seem to constantly 1 up each other with new designs (which is great for us as consumers). It seems like there is a specific line and fly size combination that can make even mediocre rods sing.

Helios are super nice to cast though and feel near weightless IMO!

Stu, I’ve been debating the 17-55 for a while, how do you like it? the pictures look great by the way especially the nautilus reel shot

in reply to: I went fishing and all I got was whitefish love…… #42959

lando, the best is a double whitey bite on a double nymph.

Ill take 6″ mini cutts robbing a pmx as soon as it hits the water any day over that bull mess!

Abe, if you are really serious about throwing bigger bugs, i would recommend picking up an inexpensive 8wt and a decent line. if you are fishing for black bass, your reel will not be as important, its usually just a line holder.

Fishing with a 5 wt with bigger bugs is really frustrating regardless of the rod. An 8wt will get your fly there and allow you to get a decent hookset on a largemouth if you get a grab. I use a sage RPLX 8wt that I bought on ebay for around $200 and sage smallmouth bass floating line. It will zing most clousers and deer hair bugs.

As for the multi tip, the 9wt rio multi-tip setup that I use for stripers can be aggravating. For only using a handful of times a year, it does fine versus buying 4 different setups.

    Josh –

That was a really great float; thanks man.  We caught several dink browns (all apparently wild – they looked like a million bucks), and I missed one that might have tapped 20″ as we shot through a rapid.  I just need to restock all my flies from Kelly Galloup’s “Dirty Old Man” series and I’ll be in business.

Has anyone here floated the entirety of the Hooch from Buford Dam to the Hwy 41 bridge?  I’ve covered everything from Roswell to the 41 takeout now; it’d be interesting to have floated the whole of the trout water.

    Zach

Zach, i have floated the entire river and it is very unique and challenging from section to section.

It is a beautiful river that fishes unlike any that I have fished elsewhere.  The upper section fishes great once you figure out a few quirks, especially the area between settles bridge down to the indian fish trap just above medlock bridge (where josh mentioned by the golf course).

Another great stretch is the from jones bridge to holcomb bridge.

next time i am in town i will give you an open invitation if you are interested (same for you josh)

Dusty, Absolutely Kick ass cover to cover.

i have had a hard on for dropping into the teton river ever since a buddy of mine did it 2 years ago and Aaron’s article might throw a monkey wrench in my summer plans that i thought i had finalized.

your hard work has paid off, keep us posted on following issues

Steve, I picked up an ikelite case and dome port for a canon rebel film (from the Andre Aggasi days) for under $100 on ebay. It is taking on water from the dome port and for the life of me I cant seem to get it to stop in my tub tests. A new O-ring is on the way and if that doesn’t fix it, i think that im going to caulk it shut!

I guess my point is that film setups are super cheap!

it would be nice not to have to disassemble as you pass through the park if you were going to hunt outside of the park.

in reply to: Su-weet. Boulder Boat Works Gets Serious #51715

I had to snicker when I saw the Boulder Boat ad in the most recent edition of The Drake (page 29). The ad states, “No Wood To Maintain”.

I quit getting worked up over folks that perpetuate the myth that owning a wooden boat entails hours and hours of sanding and varnishing. Mine is ten years old now and still has the original paint and varnish. She’s got some battle scars but still going strong. I call it character.

If you ever owned a wooden boat…and took care of it….like Dave says…store it out of the sun in a dry place (my garage) it will last a long time. I can’t comment on handling since this is the only drifter I’ve owned….but can speak about maintenance or lack thereof.

the moisture content of our georgia air prevents wood from drying out and cracking in the manner that it does out west, especially during winter months. wood left outdoors through a harsh western mountain winter can dry, crack and varnish can flake off. patio furniture and decks are typically sanded and varnished yearly, i would imagine that a wood boat left outdoors would do the same

if you don’t mind used gear, then check out KEH.com

they have used 30d’s for under $400 and they should work with your older lenses as long as they are EOS autofocus
