    Hey fellow Georgians –

I’m thinking about floating the Buford Dam section of the Hooch this weekend with Lauren.

If your in a canoe, you can to float to Settles Bridge for a short float, or to abbotts Bridge(hwy 120) for a long float. Both spots have nice take outs and parking, I think settles is about 4 miles, and abbotts is 13 miles. Up the river outfitters does a shuttle service to both of those take outs if you only want to bring one car, I think it’s like $10-$15.
I like the abbotts to medlock or abbotts to jones bridge better, the areas around the dam can be packed with tubes and canoes on a nice weekend.

    Josh –

How long are those other two floats?

Abbotts to medlock is 4miles, It takes about 3-4hrs, if you keep going to jones bridge its 3 more miles, and maybe 2-3hrs more. These are fishing times, it can be done a lot faster if your not fishing. I like to stop and fish the areas around the pleasnt hill bridge and also the grass banks along AAC both spot hold lots of fish. If you are going to go to jones bridge, park and take out on the roswell side, it has a ramp, and is alot easier with a canoe then the gwinnett side.

That was a really great float; thanks man.

    Josh –

That was a really great float; thanks man.  We caught several dink browns (all apparently wild – they looked like a million bucks), and I missed one that might have tapped 20″ as we shot through a rapid.  I just need to restock all my flies from Kelly Galloup’s “Dirty Old Man” series and I’ll be in business.

Has anyone here floated the entirety of the Hooch from Buford Dam to the Hwy 41 bridge?  I’ve covered everything from Roswell to the 41 takeout now; it’d be interesting to have floated the whole of the trout water.

    Zach

Zach, i have floated the entire river and it is very unique and challenging from section to section.

It is a beautiful river that fishes unlike any that I have fished elsewhere.  The upper section fishes great once you figure out a few quirks, especially the area between settles bridge down to the indian fish trap just above medlock bridge (where josh mentioned by the golf course).

Another great stretch is the from jones bridge to holcomb bridge.

next time i am in town i will give you an open invitation if you are interested (same for you josh)

Yea Adam, that would be great. I still need to take you out on lanier, I’m killing them at night right now.

Zach, I was wondering how that section would fish this year, I heard after the flood last year that there was 100+ dead trout up on the grass at aac. A buddy of mine said he has a picture of it, I’ll try to get him to send it to me.

    Tim –

We skipped them this time; I was standing in the canoe the whole time and none of the fish were big enough to warrant being immortalized.

And Tim – I was too busy trying to keep the canoe straight and in position for Zach to fish effectively to even think about the camera.

why do you need a boat ramp for a canoe?

Because I don’t care to drag it through a forest.

ZM, jump over to ngto and ask this question and you will get detailed information. They also have a map section that might show you exactly what you are looking for.
I know there will be a floatilla from ngto on the water Saturday from the dam, but not sure where they are taking out.

No boat ramp at settles, it does have a good landing area just under the old bridge, but you will have to carry it though the woods maybe 75yrds at the most. Settles has a pretty good parking area, but it fills up fast, and unless you go early, expect a lot of other boaters/tubers to be around. If you want a boat ramp, the next one below the dam will be at abbots bridge, 8miles below settles.

Settles Bridge has a canoe launch if I remember right. There were some photos posted on NGTO of the launch site last week. It will be a piece-o-cake with a canoe.
The canoe outpost on Hwy 20 runs a shuttle service.

I was at settles today, and took a few pics for you,
Here is the take out, and they have built a wood walk way to the parking lot, it pretty nice and wide.
