MemberThat looks like some great water, it reminds me of the Coosa River or the upper Cahaba. Any good suggestions for a good place to camp up that way this fall?
Peter, unfortunately the Chattahoochee parks close at dark and do not offer camping (due to loitering issues i suspect)
It is also right in the middle of suburbia!

MemberI hate that! I’m sure that there will be improvements that necessitate a revamp, but to me, it sounds like they are developing new model to sell more rods.
Personally I respect Winston for making “sloppy” rods for trout and I hate the fact that double rig indicator nymphing has taken priority over unrolling a leader with a dry fly! (until you get into 6 weight +)
The BIIX in a 5wt is a great rod for double duty and speeding/stiffening it up is IMHO why they developed the BII-MX!

MemberNiel, I posted in the wrong thread eariler, sorry
Black foam beetles are killer on the Madison and small foam ants are too. Both are easy to tie as well.
Chernobyl’s are my personal favorite, but I will be trying some Hopper Juan’s.
Fishing hoppers to me is much like fishing streamers. Original patterns or colors get more reaction strikes, especially later in the season when big fish have seen lots of flies.
Partially submerged hoppers seem to do really well also

MemberThe ant and beetle advice is very sound. Those creeks get plowed with hoppers.

MemberIf you have not fished from Jones Bridge to Holcomb Bridge you need to. It is one of my favorites for paddling/wading.

MemberI had a chevrolet truck with a camper shell and I put together a similar setup to what tim has described. 2×6’s across the wheelwells and a sheet of plywood over the top with cheap carpet and a thermorest. you just cant jump up in the middle of the night or you will get your bell rung! i made a plywood shelf underneath that i had my stuff in to give me easy access to gear. post pictures of what you wind up with

MemberI cast a TFO Finesse 7’9″ 3wt and it felt similar to my sage 379 Light line. I believe that they are about $179 and come in 4 pc rods.

MemberI’d start by picking up the $100 50/1.8. Its a great lens, and would help fill your gap nicely. I’ve been making a point of shooting with that lens and not the zooms lately, and have been having alot of fun. I think you will miss the wide angle if you got rid of the 10-22. Other than that, the 28-135 IS actually isn’t that bad of a lens, and you can get them fairly reasonable.
I had debated that also. does the MK I metal mount shoot with the same sharpness as the mk ii?
I had debated the 17-55 but have reservations with the price for a non L build. but it has allegedly shot as sharp as the 24-70L

MemberHemostats and clippers that float. I dropped a pair of hemo’s (the Dr. Slick ones that are scissors and hemos) overboard on my pontoon boat just last week. I sat there and watched them sink as I realized I didn’t have them attached to a zinger. oops.
I second the felt replacement that does not foster the spread of invasives that will perform as well as felt.

these x-tools floating pliers are great. i have had a pair for 2 years and they still cut great, even with braided lines
imho floating anything is good, regardless of the maker

MemberStar inflatables offer some awesome boats that are bombproof, row great and are reasonably priced.
Streamtech & maravia make a great drifter but it was way out of my budget when I bought a raft.
I would stay on the smaller side (13′ or smaller) because you can launch a smaller raft down a bank much easier and smaller rafts get through skinnier waters easier.
I had an Avon scout 12′ with a clavey frame before i bought my drift boat and it was great. I commonly took it to canoe launches and dropped off of the side of banks that i would never consider with my drifter.
To me, oars did not seem to matter much with my raft. Unless you get a high dollar raised hull raft, oars do not make a huge difference to rowing imho. On a drifter its a totally different story though.
good luck with your search, hope that helps!

MemberA foam filled floating fly rod. Ive thought about taking the butt cap off and filling the grip section up with great stuff but I’m not sure how well it would cast.
I would take an extra ounce on a fly rod if it would float with a reel and line attached.
I don’t think that it is really necessary with heaver saltwater rods, but for 6wt down it would be great

Membergood looking fish. did you use sinking lines through there? looks like the water is up? I miss the hooch man!

MemberI will be heading out west the 1st of August as well. I will be spending two days on the Yellowstone around Livingston and two days on the Madison. Then I will take a couple of days for camera work as I work my way down to Jackson WY for a day on the Snake and then a day on the upper Green. I might also spend a day or two fishing the Green’s tribs, great wade fishing!
Do yourself a favor and stay out of the park. Spend some time on the upper Green feeder streams around Pinedale, WY. Some of those who have done this never went back to the park.
I will more than likely be fishing the jellystone the first week or two of august as well. I have been craving some fish on foam action.
Zach, the Yellowstone through paradise valley in august is incredible! I highly recommend you check it out if you like catching big cutties on foam flies or streamers all day, much like the Snake. It can be absolutely killer after runoff, but it is not a river that you would want to row yourself (lots of big rollers and swirls that will fill a boat up fast).

MemberMike, I have the 70-200 2.8 non IS and it is the same way. Super fast and straight forward. Your f/4 is supposed to be much sharper from what I have seen and read. I want to pick up a decent walk around lens and have been bouncing back and forth between the 17-55 2.8 and the 24-70 2.8

MemberI went with the 50d since I am just switching from Sony to Canon, I am learning about the system. I bought the body and 24/70 L
I am going to buy the 70 200 2.8 L II and the 100mm L macro and the 17-40L f4. for starters I’m sure. i would love suggestions on other good glass to hink about also. The 10-22mm is killer on the 1.6 crop formats. I use mine a good bit on my 30d.
I would love to have the 17-55mm 2.8 IS as well. While not L glass (i suspect due to being a crop frame only lens), it is arguably better in IQ than the 24-70 and gives you image stabilization.
Both of them seem to hold their value well also so you could get out with minimal loss if you went to FF.

Sorry about that, apparently they have pulled the plug on GON.
Lando, I have had my eyes on this one. Just way out of my league price wise

MemberZach, there seems to be a steady flow of john boats for sale on the GON forum.
I have a 5hp Honda 4 stroke and it is great in every aspect. I strongly recommend if you stumble across a deal on one.
You will probably want a short shaft on a john boat in the river also.
