MemberHere’s the thing, I own the 50mm 1.2 and rarely shoot it wide open.

MemberKurt: I agree … Sort of. I mostly posted it just for *wow 3300$* factor. However, some lenses just have a nice quality to them. From what I have seen this is one of those lenses. Plus, it would be fun to play around with in low-light no flash situations. I can think of two or three other lenses that I would rather have for that amount of cash though. 😀
Couple of my fav shots from the 50mm f1

http://www.flickr.com/photos/trans_parent/4321777721/Prob not oranges to oranges, but I have been shooting quite a bit with a takumar 50mm 1.4 lately and love the feel of the images way more than my canon 1.8 .

John BennettMemberI shoot wide open often with fast glass and longer focal lengths which translates to less DoF. 500mm at f4 is razor thin when shooting close to the mfd etc
Yes it takes getting used to and yes sometimes you *blow* a shot when you don’t have time to take it, then quickly preview it, however the pay off of having lenses like these can’t be understated imo. They do things, or open doors that are otherwise not there.
Not to mentioned *gag* ( I hate the term) “Bokeh” afforded by these lenses. Lots of “fast glass” will render area’s oof, but the aestetic quality of the “Bokeh” can be night and day.
So no, not all fast glass is created equal.
Optically Id say the 85mm f1.8 and 85 f1.2 are “close” however when it comes to less tanglible things like “bokeh” and as Cory said “feel” the f1.2 smokes the 1.8 (which is now collecting dust)

Would love to play with a 50 f1.0Jun 4, 2010 at 5:10 pm #70938kurt budliger

John BennettMemberlol no kidding Kurt.
Im lucky in that I have been able to borrow/test some fantastic lenses from friends. Virtually all my lens purchases have come as a result of playing with a friends first. No one I know has a 50 1.0 though.Re fast glass.
Yeah Im sore addicted to it.
What I like about the various 50mm and 85mm primes is that beside being very versatile lenses, we as a consumer can buy the slower options first. Use them for a few years (or more) and discover for ourselves whether stepping up to a faster cousin is for us. I used the 85 f1.8 for 5 years before deciding to pull the trigger on 1.2 and wouldnt hesitate to recomend it as a good fast lens to anyone.Jun 7, 2010 at 6:06 pm #70940yuhina
MemberI’m not sure there’s any benefit to the f1 vs the 1.2, and the price of the 1.2 is less than half.
It’s called flagship lens, it set the bar…. and it’s mainly says “Canon can do it, how about you Nikon?” not necessary will extract benefit for the common users… same as the older 50/ f 0.95

David AndersonMemberI also have the 50 1.2 and while it’s a great lens, it’s not quite the original 50 f1.
That said and having shot with the f1, I think the 85 1.2 is better and more useful as a portrait lens because it has less distortion on a head & shoulder portrait than the 50’s.
The 85 1.2L is Canons best lens IMHO.They also cost a lot less, focus faster, are lighter and not impossible to get.. 😉
