I’m walking out the door, taking my 7 year old to the Smokies for 3 days, taking the hoppers and beetles to see how and if they work 😉

i tied a friggin box of hoppers of all sizes from realistic to impressionistic for my colorado trip.

didn’t even get a nod from a single fish. maybe too early in season, bad presentation, etc.

at least i have a whole box of flies for the summer out here 🙂

i’ll have a terrestrial box pic once i upload all my trip pics

The ant and beetle advice is very sound.  Those creeks get plowed with hoppers.

Ditto Neal. Black foam beetles are killer on the Madison and small foam ants are too. Both are easy to tie as well.

Chernobyl’s are my personal favorite, but I will be trying some Hopper Juan’s.

Fishing hoppers to me is much like fishing streamers. Original patterns or colors get more reaction strikes, especially later in the season when big fish have seen lots of flies.

Partially submerged hoppers seem to do really well also

The Fat Albert is a fantastic hopper pattern for some of those rivers mentioned.
