MemberI am looking for recommendations on a shorter (7.5′) 3wt to use on smaller mountain streams chasing brookies and cutts that can also double as a sunfish rod for here at home in Texas. I would like it to be a 4 piece as I would like to use it on day hikes. I currently have med-fast to fast action rods in other weights (BIIX, Helios and Scott A3). While I like high end rods, I am not looking to break the bank with this 3wt. It will most likely get the least use out of my arsenal as I only get to the mountains a time or two a year and the wind here is normally too much for using a 3wt on a daily basis. I would like to hear what you guys recommend.

Cameron MortensonMemberShane…you know I’m going to give up some fiberglass options…
What is your budget for this rod purchase?
Does it have to be 7 1/2 foot long?

Roy ConleyMemberI have this real nice Winston 7.5′ 3 wt B2t, which is a 4 piece rod.

Tim AngeliMemberShane,
The Orvis Superfine is an absolute beauty in the 7’6″ 3wt.

MemberWish I had a less expensive option, but I fish a 7’9″ Winston LT-5, which is really a great rod.

MemberThe Sage TXL rods are really nice casters but you would have to settle for 7′ or 7’10”.

MemberI bought an Echo 7 1/2 foot 3wt a few years ago just for bluegill. Turned into one of my favorite rods.

MemberCameron, I am not tied to the 7.5′ length. I would consider a 7’er. I just want to get the right rod for the job. Honestly, I have never used glass, but I am willing to consider it. I don’t know if you are talking about choices in general or from your own quiver, but I would love to hear what you would suggest.

MemberI should have added Great Bay Rods to the list as well.

MemberI cast a TFO Finesse 7’9″ 3wt and it felt similar to my sage 379 Light line. I believe that they are about $179 and come in 4 pc rods.

MemberI’ve enjoyed my St. Croix 7’9″ 3WT Legend Ultra. It has handled several fish over 16″ with ease. It has a faster action than the Scott F or Orvis Superfine, but loads great for short casts.

MemberUsed to have a really nice little 7.5′ 3pc Winston IM6. It was a great little rod but I sold it years ago when I decided that I wanted to build bamboo rods.
I dont have the time to build rods these days, but there are plenty of hobby builders making quality cane rods for reasonable prices. Check em out, you just might like what you find. Cheers.
