MemberThanks Grant, sunflower fields are a south GA staple. We had a somewhat bearable day heat wise as well, probably unlike TX. The Field that I hunted had a large population of Ringnecks also which have no limit this season in GA

MemberWe had a great afternoon on the field today. It was a safe hunt, not to hot and everyone got lots of birds. Here are a few highlights

MemberI really would like to go dove hunting but I am just not clear on how to get it done and I don’t know anyone who dove hunts here in Georgia. Basically it looks like you just set up on the edge of a field and have three or four boxes of shells ready since you’re going to miss so many.
How do you identify where the doves will be crossing? What chokes are appropriate? Camo? I am assuming it’s illegal to hunt over bait but what about over a grain field with growing corn?
I’d certainly appreciate a primer. I like dove breast sauteed in butter and garlic and then finely sliced over pasta with a creamy dill sauce. (Try it).

Zach, I am hunting in Macon Monday afternoon, judging by the cooler temps this weekend, the birds should be flying well. We sold our land last year so I am forced to do pay hunts (kinda sucks after shooting birds whenever you want in previous years), If you are interested in joining shoot me a PM
In previous years we hunted over sunflower fields (central GA birds really like these) and plowed alternating rows.
Sunlight and rain will shut down birds flying as mentioned eariler. Bluebird days and cooler temperatures seem to make birds fly better.
As for equipment, all you really need is a gun, a few boxes of shells, a stool (bucket with padded lid) and a camo shirt.
The MoJo dove decoys are killer, as are decoy trees but if they are flying good, it may not matter. cloth blinds are good though if you are set up in a cut row.
I either shoot modified or improved modified chokes (depending on how the field is laid out and where people are around me).
I believe that in GA geese are open this weekend also, and can be fun to pop if you are near a pond.
I really want to get some good shots this year but it is hard to put down a gun to snap (hopefully I can limit out early and have some time!)

MemberI found a box stuffed full of hand-tied Royal Wulffs (and only Royal Wulffs!) on Slough Creek in 2006. I still have it in a drawer in case someone claims it.

Those were mine!
I put my rod and reel on the top of the camper shell of my truck while I was taking my waders off after a days fishing. As I drove off it fell onto the highway and the guy behind me ran over it. He was unable to flag me down, but did call Sage, gave them the serial # and had them call me to let me know that my rod and reel had been recovered. I mailed all 20 pieces back (with a check) for a new rod, and the orvis reel survived with only scratches.

MemberDave, looks like a great trip. the bighorn is a really underrated river by the sounds of it. maybe they need to call it the pighorn! hopper fishing is the pinnacle of trout fishing imho
Adam McDowell
MemberGreat pics as always, especially the beached whale! Did yall get lots afternoon showers?
I like the South Fork Skiff, its identical to mine. A great early season big hole boat

MemberMichael, I have not cast one and am in a flyshopless area currently. The Z-axis to me is flexible but fast and the XP was stiff and fast, im guessing that the VXP falls somewhere in the middle as far as flexibility. I am looking forward to casting a 6 to see where it fits in the lineup. I have owned an XP, FLi and currently own a RPLX and RPLXI in a 690 configuration and by the sounds of it seems like 5-8wt is the zen size for this line.
I dont understand the only fast action rods comment that someone else made earlier. I seems like everyone in the industry has a progressive action rod line.

MemberThanks guys, this is more than enough to get me going. I will have to get in touch with LRO

MemberGrant, I saw a lab go down 2 years ago on opening weekend from the heat at a south GA dove shoot. Heat exhaustion is a serious deal in early season hunts. I’m sure that you are more seasoned than me (im still a youngin)but for the sake of your 4 legged friend, be careful!
BTW prickly pears suck!

Memberthe TXLF grips are pretty cool. I really like products that re-invent the wheel and it seems like grips and reel seats have been stagnant in their company lately.
Those are such killer brookie rods imho

MemberDave, Do make sure that the name on your boarding pass matches your drivers license exactly. TSA in Bozeman pull that one on me and I had to have delta un-check me, re-name me and re-check me in.
Adam McDowell
MemberDave, you should be fine, $25 is the new norm with everyone unless you fly first class or are a super duuper frequent flyer.
I have flown with my sage 3pc tube for years on Delta, Frontier, Skywest, ASA and Airtran with no problems. Usually one personal item and one carry on are the norm, so you will be fine.
Watch out with the 50lb weight limit and a roller duffel though. My bags seem to grow on the trip home.

MemberIm holding my breath for the 389 (V)LL in a 4 piece. The VPS Lights didn’t really have the softness or light weight of comparable size LL’s.
Adam McDowell
MemberThanks Matt, is Abrams creek worth fishing of does it get too much pressure?
Adam McDowell
MemberWell maybe the GLX will come down to the mid price rod level.
Agreed, Like the IMX did years ago.
Im sure the bass world will be shaken up by the new model, they have rightfully earned an iconic status.
I loved the recoil guides on some of the GLX models, surely they will stay in the lineup
Bill, I agree that I am not sold on a full price matte finish rod with blue wraps. not near as pretty as a scott or winston
Adam McDowell
MemberIm kinda pumped to see GLX’s on clearance. I’ve been eying a crosscurrent pro 1 piece 7 weight but prices haven’t fallen yet

MemberI am growing fond of Plano 3600’s due to their durability, strength, size and affordability. I fish out of a boat most of the time so their bulkiness is not a huge deal breaker. I can fit one in my fishpond waistpack but it is snug. The 3618’s have built in dividers and are great for small flies but difficult to find. here is my dry box

Dry box by TheMcDowell’s, on FlickrI keep my streamers in a cliff bugger beast jr as well as a bugger barn. I also keep a small cliff days worth box for my midges and it is great for quick wading trips. I personally have been very happy with cliff products but get frustrated with fumbling through various small boxes.

MemberThanks guys
Mike, we fished the EG by the tree farm and had no luck. It was supposed to be a slam dunk there, have you fished there much?
Adam McDowell
Membergreat looking fish man! I bet that pig had you doubled over on the boo. I can understand the no time for fishing dilemma lately, getting a fix seems to put me back into perspective of priorities.
Adam McDowell
MemberSteve, your shots look great! I am amazed at the water clarity but I guess thats another reason that Alaska is so special. How was the fishing?
