MemberI like the plano 3618 (i had to look through their website to find the exact model) because it has 18 fixed compartments that will not come loose and mix up your flies.
They are the same size as the cliff bugger beast jr profile wise and my patagonia bag will hold at least 8

MemberIm kind of rough on gear unintentionally. Not to brag but I racked up 5 warranty replaced rods in 09′ and 2 in 08′. Four of which were in a single occurrence totaling up to a huge lesson learned and a huge repair bill at my local fly shop.
Through my reel lessons here are the ones that work for me;
put it in the back of a pickup truck as you drive around town (a once white shimano stratic)
leave it in the rod holder of a boat (out of balanced lamson)
run over it with a car or 6 (Orvis rocky mountain large arbor cast aluminum reel that i left on my camper shell of my truck and survived with only surface scratches)

Memberditto, my beretta locked up in dec. and has been at the factory since then. i love looking at it but sometimes question whether i should have purchased a SBE vs. an AL 391

Nothing right now, but in a couple years when Lauren gets done with her PhD, I’ll be looking at getting something that’s appropriate for the local waters I’m in. My options are pretty much (1) jonboat with jet, (2) Supreme with jet, (3) driftboat, or (4) raft. Cost and how I plan to fish and how many fishing buddies I have at the time will all factor in. I will say, my preference is for a driftboat even with the impracticality that sometimes has, just because I enjoy my days on the water in a driftboat more than in any other type of craft.
Zach
Ive been down the raft avenue and now have a drift boat which is great, but some days I find myself peeling out of work early to do a hooch solo afternoon and the drift boat requires as much time tinkering (even with a drag chain)
A motor is an absolute must if you fish the hooch, but it weighs you down on the Hi or the toccoa.
have you ever considered going in halfzies with someone?
also, plan on $600-$1000 to get one here from Ro, Clacka or Hyde
all being said, a jet sled will fish all but the bone-iest water, and will let you foot troll to control yourself solo double.

MemberI love my classic Sage RPLX 890. It will pull double the xi2 and can be picked up in the 3pc vareity for $175-$250 on ebay pretty regularly. put your money in the reel and a good line taper.
I have a super 8 (balances well) for my rplx 8wt and it really sings with a 9wt sa bonefish line!

i put a front knee brace on it from ro last summer before the great southeast floods hit
My oars are pyramid diamond blades that are fo-nominal for the skinnies that we get here
that Honda BF-5 is a stud that requires no maintenance and always cranks within two pulls
honestly jet sleds have been weighing heavy on my brain in the last year though. a yamaha g3 1656 ccj would do nearly all of the fin chasing that i desire, drift boats suck on flat water!

Membergreat photo Jay! Now that you have gotten your shot, when you get done soaking it up, I would love to hear what is next on the list, maybe a cinnamon teal? (doesn’t really compare in rarity to what you have but a cool rarer seen one nonetheless)

MemberZach, get in touch with Drew Gregory, he knows as much as any on the subject.

MemberI have a lamson lightspeed 3.5, nautilus FW 7+, abel super 8 & tibor riptide.
The first two are affordable, super smooth, super lightweight, really durable and are great for reds, bones, bass, stripers
The latter two are on my 9 and 10 and are reels that will be heirlooms and will stop a train… but they cost twice as much
There are a lot of good products out there right now, its all about what you want to spend and what you like

MemberZach, the upper toccoa is where the DH water is. It is typically good through the spring. should be off of aska road area.
Ditto on unicoi, they can get you set up. If you are taking a boat to the lower toccoa keep in mind that there are no real boat ramps so eat your wheaties
Adam McDowell
MemberPaul, have fun, im in tulsa for a while

MemberI use the coldwater rio versitip on my 9wt for stripers and it works fine for that but you do get hinging at the loops and they can almost “catch” when they pass through the guides while casting.
It does work great for casting from a boat short repeaded distances or swinging flies.
Out of curosity, what would you use it for on a rod under a 6wt?
Adam McDowell
MemberDave, there is a TFO Finesse 389 4-pc on NGTO.org swap shop for $120
Adam McDowell
Membergood lookin moose,
thanks for the advice. For my use it would not justify spending twice as much. You just helped me make my decision. Now I just need more days off to fishAdam McDowell
MemberThanks John,
I’ve been reading the canon digital photography forum to liberally. their consensus seems to be that the f/4 is a dog for sports, which i would assume a jumping fish shot to be.I really was just looking for re-assurance since the f/4 non IS is the only one that is really in my budget.
out of curiosity, have you tried this lens with a 1.4 teleconverter?
Adam McDowell
MemberI’ve had 3 versions of the 70-200 2.8 and they’re not a bad lens, just not very sharp on the high rez cameras compared to the f4 version or any of the prime L lenses in the same range.
They’re good for action because of focusing speed, but not sharp enough for anything serious.
The new version, if it has the new coatings should be a big improvement and I look forward to trying one.
Ive been bouncing back and forth on these two (in the non IS model) and keep hearing the same comments on the IQ of the f/4 over the 2.8.
